By Will Kuhns In three days, Coach Bruce Arena will name the 23 players who will represent the United States at the 2002 World Cup. The announcement will occur during the 6 p.m. ET edition of ESPN’s SportsCenter on Monday. It culminates the six-month stretch, since the team clinched qualification, that Arena used to make his final evaluations. The United States played 13 games since qualifying, going 7-4-2, scoring 18 goals and allowing nine. In those games, Arena looked at 40 players, 14 of which did not play for him during the final round of qualifying. Of those 13 “new” players, probably no more than four will make the roster. Either Tony Meola or Tim Howard, who each started one of the past 13 games, will likely be the team’s third goalkeeper. Next most likely might be Frankie Hejduk, who after playing just one game in 2001, was second only to Jeff Agoos in games played among defenders during the past six months, with eight. Defenders Pablo Mastroeni and Richard Mulrooney have an outside chance of being named, as does midfielder Brian West. Among the “incumbents” used during the Hexagonal, the following 17 players appear certain to make the roster: Goalkeepers — Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller. Defenders – Agoos, Gregg Berhalter, Eddie Pope, David Regis, Tony Sanneh. Midfielders — Chris Armas, Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones, John O’Brien, Claudio Reyna, Earnie Stewart. Forwards — Mathis, Brian McBride, Joe-Max Moore, Josh Wolff. That leaves six spots for the following 16 “bubble” players: Goalkeepers (1) – Meola, Howard or Zach Thornton. Defenders (3) – Steve Cherundolo, Hejduk, Carlos Llamosa, Mastroeni, Mulrooney, Greg Vanney. Midfielders (2) – DaMarcus Beasley, Jovan Kirovski, Eddie Lewis, Brian West, Richie Williams. Forward (?) — Ante Razov, Jeff Cunningham. The players making the roster will report to training camp May 1 at the recently completed Capital Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Although some European-based players may not be available May 1, Arena has said he will not call players into camp who are not among the 23.
