After a thrilling second half, Brazil and the Netherlands are tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of play in their semifinal match in Marseille. Within 30 seconds after the start of the second half, Ronaldo put Brazil into the lead. Brazil attacked down the left side, and Rivaldo sent a fine ball into Ronaldo’s path. The Brazilian star fought off Philip Cocu’s challenge before sliding the ball through Van Der Sar’s legs from about ten yards. The Netherlands had a golden chance to equalize in the 53rd minute, when Wim Jonk’s corner kick was flicked on and Taffarel did well to push the resulting hard shot off the bar. Brazil nearly had a second when Bebeto sprang Ronaldo into the Dutch box in the 63rd minute, but Van Der Sar won a race to the ball and managed to cover it after allowing it to squirt out of his hands. Ronaldo had another superb chance 10 minutes later, when a through ball saw him alone against Van Der Sar, but with Edgar Davids bearing down behind him, Ronaldo’s shot rolled just wide of the right post. Some flashy dribbling by Denilson in the Dutch box led to a fine chance soon after, as the young winger used some fine footwork to confuse Aron Winter and fired a low cross between Winter’s legs that Rivaldo would likely have converted had he not fallen on the ball. He attempted a shot from a seated position but it was saved by Van Der Sar. A fine give-and-go between Kluivert and substitute Pierre Van Hooijdonk in the 80th minute left Kluivert open for a volley from 15 yards out, but it went well over the bar. The Dutch continued to search for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 87th minute, when Ronald De Boer took a ball on the right side of the area. He sent a cross into the box for Kluivert, whose powerful header bounced beneath Taffarel’s outstretched arm and into the goal. The Dutch had two more chances in injury time, but Taffarel smothered a ball before Bergkamp could run onto it and also saved Kluivert’s shot from the left corner of the area. In addition, Holland’s Van Hooijdonk was booked for diving in an attempt to earn a penalty kick. The match is now headed into 30 minutes of extra time, with the “golden goal” rule in effect. If neither team scores, a penalty kick shootout will follow.
