Brazil and the Netherlands are headed to a penalty shootout after playing 30 scoreless minutes of extra time. Ronaldo broke free through the Dutch defense in the second minute of the second extra period, juking one defender to set him up for a shot against Van Der Sar, but Frank De Boer managed to poke the ball away from behind. The resulting corner yielded a shot that would have beaten Van Der Sar, but was blocked by Davids. Denilson freed Roberto Carlos on the left side, and the defender sent a low shot to the near post that Van Der Sar saved, had trouble containing for a split second, but then controlled. Clarence Seedorf replaced a tiring Wim Jonk for the Dutch in the 111th minute. The Dutch had a scare while Jaap Stam was off the field receiving treatment for an injury. An open Emerson received a ball at the top of the area and fired a shot that went over the bar. Brazil had a last chance when good work by Denilson led to a shot by Rivaldo that bounced off of a Dutch defender’s leg and fell to Van Der Sar. The match now goes to a penalty shootout.
