U.S.-Yugoslavia is Dooley’s last international match Thomas Dooley, who joined the United States team in 1992, will play in what he has said will be his final game for his adopted nation in Thursday’s match against Yugoslavia (live on ABC at 2:30 p.m. ET). Dooley, who has 79 caps and 7 goals in his six years with the team, has served as the team’s captain in France. He was named the U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year in 1993, just one year after making his national team debut. He scored one of the United States’ most important goals in 1993 — the game-winning goal in the team’s historic upset win over England in U.S. Cup ’93. Dooley, whose father served in the U.S. Army, made his debut for the United States in a 3-1 victory against Ireland on May 30, 1992. Included in his 79 career caps are starts in each of the USA’s six World Cup games of 1994 and 1998. Preki wants to start Preki Radosavljevic, the dynamic midfielder with the deadly left foot is inserted into the second half when the U.S. needs a goal. But Major League Soccer’s MVP wants to start, especially tomorrow, when the U.S. plays against his native Yugoslavia. “I was looking forward so much to this game,” said Preki, who was born in Belgrade and turned 35 today. “But it seems like I won’t be starting and that’s very disappointing.” Preki continued, saying, “I thought I would start one or two games here, so it’s been hard. After the Germany game, (U.S. coach Steve Sampson) tried to reassure me that he still believed in me, but I don’t really believe it. It seems like everyone has been given a chance but me.” Preki played 30 minutes against Iran, and saw no action against Germany. Sampson’s only comment on the matter was, “Who said he’s not starting?” Preki said he was not starting based on how players were used during today’s U.S. practice, as well as his intuition. “I’ve been around a while, I can read a coach’s mind,” he said. Tomorrow’s projected lineup GOALKEEPER — Brad Friedel. DEFENDERS — Eddie Pope, Thomas Dooley, David Regis. MIDFIELDERS — Cobi Jones, Joe-Max Moore, Mike Burns, Ernie Stewart, Claudio Reyna, Frankie Hejduk. FORWARD — Brian McBride.
