This will not be the first time that the U.S. has played Iran in soccer. The two countries squared off in the semifinals of the Third FIFA Indoor World Championship, held in Hong Kong in 1992. National team defender Jeff Agoos played in the game. “I remember the game quite well,” he said. “They were up 2-1 or 2-0 and we came back and won 4-2. The Iranian players were technically very good and fought the whole game. “The media had put the same spin on it, but obviously it wasn’t as big, because it was the indoor championship and the game itself was just two teams playing each other. It was kind of fun.” Agoos recalled meeting the Iranian players at a get-together after the tournament. “After the final, which we lost to Brazil, there was a party with all the teams, and that’s where we met the Iranian players. They were very happy to be there. Everything was normal — the way it always is when athletes get together. Obviously, they were just regular people, just like everybody else.” It remains to be seen whether Agoos, who did not play in the USA’s 2-0 loss to Germany, will get a chance to take the field against Iran again.
