Juergen Klinsmann set up teammate Andy Moeller for one goal and scored another as Germany defeated the USA 2-0 in their World Cup Group F match at the Parc des Princes in Paris. The second German goal seemed to deflate the Americans, who had played well in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. In the final 20 minutes, despite moving more players forward and winning several corner kicks, the U.S. did not create any truly dangerous chances. Claudio Reyna’s 25-yard blast in the 77th minute sailed over the bar, and Tab Ramos hit another long shot six minutes later that went wide to the left. Eddie Pope drew a yellow card in the 86th minute for a foul on Klinsmann, while Hamann and Heinrich were booked for Germany in the 77th and 84th minutes, respectively. With the loss, the Americans find themselves desperately needing a win against Iran in Lyon on June 21 if they hope to advance to the second round. With a -2 goal differential, the U.S. also needs as big a victory as possible. Germany and Yugoslavia will also play on June 21. A game summary will be posted shortly.
