Yugoslavia has defeated the USA 1-0 in their Group F match in Nantes. Slobodan Komljenovic’s fourth-minute header proved to be the only goal of a match in which the U.S. did not play poorly. The Americans created some decent chances and had a good amount of the possession. Unfortunately, their lack of finishing again denied them a result. The second half was relatively uneventful for the opening ten minutes. Yugoslavia then substituted Brnovic for young midfielder Dejan Stankovic, and Brnovic helped to set up a shot for a teammate from just outside the U.S. area that went over the crossbar. Preki Radosavljevic finally got the chance to play against his native country when he came on for Joe-Max Moore in the 58th minute to inject more energy into the U.S. attack. He made a run in the 60th minute that eventually set Reyna up for a shot that deflected off a Yugoslavian defender to Kralj. Yugoslavia’s Ognjenovic was carded in the 62nd minute for diving in the U.S. area. Mihajlovic took another free kick in the 63rd minute that swerved to Friedel’s left, but the U.S. keeper made the save. Steve Sampson made another substitution by sending Eric Wynalda in for Frankie Hejduk in the 65th minute, with Waldo assuming the right midfield spot. Ognjenovic continued to be dangerous for Yugoslavia, as he displayed some fine ball skills in the box to set up Savo Milosevic for an eight-yard shot that went wide left in the 72nd minute. McBride had another chance for the U.S. in the 80th minute, but his left-footed shot was saved by Kralj. Unfortunately, McBride did not see that Wynalda was open at the far post. Marcelo Balboa got the chance to play in his third World Cup when he replaced Thomas Dooley in the 82nd minute. Dooley had said that this match, his 80th for the U.S., would be his last international appearance. Cobi Jones won a free kick just outside the box in the 84th minute, when he was fouled by a Yugoslavian defender while going up for a ball from Wynalda. Preki took the kick, but curled it just over the top of the bar. Despite the win, Yugoslavia finishes second in Group F on goal difference, as Germany defeated Iran 2-0. The Yugoslavs will face the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on June 29, while Germany will meet Group E runner-up Mexico. For the U.S., the loss ends a disappointing tournament that saw the Americans fail to gain a single point. The U.S. team members will begin dispersing Friday morning. Some players will remain in France or leave for vacations. Others will return to their MLS clubs. Eric Wynalda is set to play for San Jose when the Clash meet Los Angeles on June 27, while Marcelo Balboa will be with the Colorado Rapids for their June 28 CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Leon of Mexico.
