The U.S. recovered from a dreadful outing against China in its opening game to beat Chile, 4-1, in the second game at the World Youth Championship in Argentina. DaMarcus Beasley led the way with two goals, scoring in the fifth minute and again in the 39th after Chile had tied the score. Brad Davis, who missed the first game (suspension), came off the bench to score the third goal in the second half, and Edson Buddle, dubbed “El Tanque” (The Tank) by the local media, finished off the scoring with a goal being called the best of the tournament to date. Buddle and Ricky Lewis were the two newcomers in the U.S. starting lineup. The Americans must beat Ukraine in their final match June 23 to ensure passage to the round of 16. They might still qualify as one of four third-place teams with a loss or a tie. Ukraine and China, which tied, 0-0, in the opening Group C game in Mendoza, lead the group with four points apiece.
