Denis Stoyan’s 90th-minute goal on a bad error by goalie D.J. Countess gave Ukraine a 1-1 tie with the United States at the World Youth Championship in Mendoza, Argentina, but the Americans clinched a berth in the second round against Egypt. Kenny Arena, son of U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena, had given the Americans the lead in the 38th minute. Arena, who was making his first appearance in the tournament, scored on a diving header from close range after a long throw-in by Oguchi Onyewu. The United States was effective on the counterattack in the second half but could not add to the lead. Countess once again was called up to make numberous saves, so it would be hard to fault him for one mistake. He let Stoyan’s harmless-looking free kick slip right through his hands into the goal at 89:32. The United States finished second in Group C, behind Ukraine, thus avoiding Argentina or Brazil in the second round, when Chile upset China, 1-0, in the Mendoza group’s final game. The Americans travel to Buenos Aires to face Egypt, second in Group A, on Wednesday, June 27.
