Charmaine Hooper netted her fifth goal of the season and Briana Scurry notched her fourth shutout as the Atlanta Beat won its fourth successive match to move into second place in the WUSA standings. Hooper and Cindy Parlow scored first-half goals in the visiting Beat's 2-0 victory over lowly New York before 5,214 at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Atlanta (5-3-1, 16 points) extended its unbeaten streak to five games and pulled within a point of first-place Philadelphia. Fourth-place San Jose (4-3-2, 14 points)pulled within three points of the lead with a 3-1 victory over visiting San Diego before 7,127 at Spartan Stadium. Katia scored two goals, including a goal-of-the-year contender, as the CyberRays spoiled Spirit interim coach Kevin Crow's debut with three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half. A look at Sunday's WUSA action: Atlanta 2 New York 0: Parlow assisted on one goal and scored the other as the Beat shut out its third successive foe, handing the Power (2-6-1, 7 points) its second straight loss. Hooper headed Parlow's cross to the far post over New York goalkeeper Nicole Williams to give Atlanta a 15th-minute lead. The play started with Kylie Bivens' take-away in midfield. Parlow doubled the advantage in the 39th minute, knocking home a rebound of Homare Sawa's blast off the left post. San Jose 3 San Diego 1: Katia scored her fifth and league-leading sixth goals of the season four minutes apart, and the CyberRays, missing injured defenders Kelly Lindsey and Brandi Chastain, dominated San Diego (2-5-2, 8 points). The game was Spirit general manager Crow's first as coach; he replaced Carlos Juarez, who was fired on Wednesday. Tisha Venturini-Hoch headed home a Michelle French cross in the 26th minute to give San Jose an advantage, and Katia followed with strong individual efforts in the 31st and 35th to make it 3-0. On the first, the Brazilian forward outmaneuvered San Diego defender Fan Yunjie, who was attempting to escort the ball beyond the end line to the right of the goal. Katia reached around the Chinese defender, keeping the ball alive on the line, then took off for the net. She squeezed a shot between Joy Fawcett and goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo at the near post for the goal. Four minutes later, Katia scored a spectacular goal. Pretinha, on the right wing, chipped the ball into the box for Katia, who caught it with her right foot, then volleyed the ball into the goal's far-side netting. Katia might have had a hat trick, but Shannon MacMillan cleared a 67th-minute header by the Brazilian off the goal line. MacMillan made two goal-line saves, and rookie Lori Lindsey made another. San Diego defender Joy Fawcett left the game at halftime with a strained calf. THIS WEEK'S SUMMARIES June 9 at San Jose San Jose 3 San Diego 1.
