Philadelphia couldn't take advantage of numerical superiority and remained winless this season in San Diego after a 1-1 draw before 5,545 at Torero Stadium. The first-place Charge (7-1-3, 24 points), which suffered its only loss May 19 at San Diego, took a lead just before halftime on Fan Yunjie's own goal but surrendered the advantage four minutes into the second half. The Spirit (2-6-3, 9 points), which snapped a four-game losing streak, earned its first point since the victory over Philly. It played the final 75 minutes with 10 players after forward Mercy Akide was red-carded for head-butting Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore. Philadelphia hit the post twice in the first half, by Marinette Pichon in the eighth minute and during a goalmouth scramble in the 45th. Fan's attempt to clear the ball during after the latter sent the ball into the San Diego net. San Diego evened things on Zhang Ouying's fifth goal of the season, set up by Lori Lindsey's 30-yard ball over the Charge back line. San Diego was without injured forward Shannon MacMillan and defender Rhiannon Tanaka, but midfielder Jen Mascaro made her first appearance since a broken foot sidelined her April 20. Philadelphia, which leads second-place Carolina by three points, played without defender Heather Mitts. THIS WEEK'S SUMMARIES June 23 at San Diego San Diego 1 Philadelphia 1.
