Five of China’s top women players, including forward Sun Wen, the leading scorer and top player in the 1999 Women’s World Cup and the leading scorer at the 2000 Olympics, have been signed by the WUSA to play in the league’s inaugural season beginning in April. The WUSA had been unsuccessful in its original attempts to sign players from China, which was runner-up to the United States in the World Cup, for the league’s initial foreign player allocation draft. Since then, Lauren Gregg, WUSA vice president of player relations, completed the signings on a visit to China last week. WUSA officials are now discussing whether to distribute the Chinese players by means of a second foreign player allocation draft, which would include three additional players signed from other countries, or to include them in the Dec. 10-11 draft, which will be held in Boca Raton, Fla. The Chinese five: Sun Wen, 27, made her first international appearance in 1990 and quickly earned a reputation as a very talented forward who could create scoring opportunities for both herself and teammates. She won the Golden Ball award as the best player in the 1999 Women’s World Cup and the Golden Boot as the top scorer with seven goals. Liu Ailing, 33, is one of the world’s top playmakers in the world and also is well known for her scoring through long-range shooting and free kicks. She first appeared on the national team in 1987. Like Sun, she has been a part of both silver medal teams (’96 Olympics and ’99 World Cup). Gao Hong, 33, has been a mainstay in goal for China for more than a decade. She turned in one of her top performances in the 1996 Olympics when she shut out the United States in a first-round match. She played from 1994 through 1997 in Japan’s L-League. Wen Lirong, 31, combines outstanding physical agility with great soccer smarts. Wen has the most seniority on China’s national team, having joined the squad in 1986 and won seven Asian Championships. Fan Yunjie, 28, is one of the fiercest defenders in the world. Her strengths include very quick ball clearance, positioning and team support. She joined the national team in 1992.
