The Washington Freedom extended its regular-season unbeaten streak to 12 games Saturday with a 2-0 decision over host San Jose in the opener of an MLS-WUSA doubleheader before 17,032 at Spartan Stadium.

Mia Hamm converted a ninth-minute penalty kick and Lori Lindsey headed home Jacqui Little's cross in first-half stoppage time for the Freedom (3-0-0, 9 points), who grabbed the top spot in the WUSA and hold a three-point lead on Boston and idle Atlanta.

The CyberRays (1-1-0, 3 points) outshot Washington, 19-10, and took 11 corner kicks, but a superb showing by Freedom goalkeeper Siri Mullinix and shots just off the mark doomed them.

Hamm's penalty kick followed a handball call on San Jose defender Keri Sanchez.

In other games Saturday:

San Diego 2 New York 0: Shannon MacMillan scored one goal, set up another and headed a ball off the goal line to secure the Spirit's shutout at Uniondale, N.Y.

MacMillan finished a superb feed from Aly Wagner in the 16th minute, and Scotswoman Julie Fleeting headed home MacMillan's corner kick in the 28th.

Fleeting fired a penalty kick off the crossbar after she was fouled by Lauren Orlandos at the edge of the box in the 20th minute, and another Fleeting goal — in the 76th minute — was called back after referee Jennifer Bennett initially awarded it. Replays showed Fleeting had handled the ball before scoring.

The Spirit improved to 1-1-0 (3 points), giving rookie head coach Omid Namazi his first WUSA victory.

New York (0-3-0, 0 points) was unable to finish myriad chances, and it lost defensive anchor Cheryl Salisbury during first-half injury time. Salisbury, who returned from Australia's triumph in the Oceania Women's Championship with a strained right calf, reinjured it and had to be carted off the field.

Boston 3 Carolina 1: The Breakers (2-1-0, 6 points) bounced back from last week's crushing loss in Atlanta with an emphatic victory at Cary, N.C.

Maren Meinert, Monica Gonzalez and Dagny Mellgren scored for Boston, which led, 2-0, by the 22nd minute and extended its advantage to three goals with 17 minutes to play.

Birgit Prinz scored for the reigning WUSA champions one minute after Mellgren's goal.

The Courage (0-2-0, 0 points) lost playmaker Hege Riise to a knee injury in the 32nd minute. Tests are scheduled for Monday to ascertain the extent of the injury.
