Mia Hamm scored two goals and Abby Wambach added three assists Saturday as the Washington Freedom bounced back from a dismal performance last weekend to drill host New York, 4-0, and extend its lead in the WUSA standings to four points.

Carolina and Philadelphia, which last week earned their first victories following four defeats, dropped home decisions to fall to 1-5.

Aly Wagner's first WUSA goal lifted San Diego past the Courage, 2-1, to move into a second-place tie with San Jose, which got a pair of goals from Pretinha to topple the Charge, 2-0.

Carolina and Philadelphia, among the top favorites heading into the season, meet May 31 at Villanova, Pa.

Atlanta plays at Boston on Sunday.

Saturday's highlights:

San Diego 2 Carolina 1: Wagner's 78th-minute strike carried the dominant Spirit (3-1-3, 12 points), off to its best start in history, as the Courage (1-5-0, 3 points) fell to 0-4 at SAS Stadium.

Julie Foudy fired San Diego ahead with a 45th-minute penalty kick, awarded after Christine Latham got tangled up with Carolina defender Staci Burt in the Courage box. Danielle Fotopoulos' fourth goal of the season, a header over Julie Fleeting from an Unni Lehn corner kick, evened the score in the 76th minute.

Wagner, the first selection in February's WUSA draft, gave her finest performance of the season, taking on additional responsibilities in injured star Shannon MacMillan's absence.

Wagner took six of the Spirit's 13 shots, putting just one on target. It came from a Julie Fleeting feed that Wagner collected with a pirouette, splitting Tiffany Roberts and Nel Fettig with a shot to the left side of the net.

The win was San Diego's first against Courage.

Washington 4 New York 0: Hamm grabbed the top spot in the WUSA scoring race by netting two first-half goals, one a penalty kick, and setting up a third as the Freedom (5-1-1, 16 points) romped before 5,347 at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Washington gave up four first-half goals in a 5-2 loss last week to visiting Carolina, its first defeat and the Courage's first win.

Hamm fired Washington ahead in the eighth minute, beating the Power backline as Abby Wambach flicked Siri Mullinix's punt into space.

She converted a 41st minute penalty kick after Shannon Boxx fouled Jacqui Little in the New York box, then sent in a corner kick just before halftime that Wambach headed to Lindsay Stoecker, whose header made it 3-0.

Wambach earned her third assist by setting up Casey Zimny, a late substitute for Hamm, in the 89th minute.

Mullinix made four saves to extend her unbeaten streak to 12 matches.

New York (3-5-0, 9 points) dropped their second in a row after posting a team-record three-game winning streak.

San Jose 2 Philadelphia 0: Pretinha scored in the 40th and 61st minutes and LaKeysia Beene made two saves to notch her fifth shutout in eight meetings with the Charge (1-5-0, 3 points) to lead the CyberRays (4-3-0, 12 points) before 5,517 at Villanova Stadium.

Pretinha took a pass from Katie Barnes and raced past Philly's back line to give San Jose the advantage just before halftime. She netted the second on a rebound after Charge goalkeeper Hope Solo deflected Mandy Clemens' shot off the crossbar.
