A stoppage-time goal by Charmaine Hooper lifted the Atlanta Beat to their first victory this season in one of three WUSA games Saturday decided in the closing minutes. Philadelphia and Carolina moved atop the standings with six points from two games after winning dramatically on the road. Hooper redirected a long pass from Homare Sawa past Washington goalkeeper Siri Mullinix three and a half minutes into stoppage time as the Beat (1-2-0, 3 points) — the nearly consensus favorite for the second WUSA title — edged the visiting Freedom, 1-0, before 7,233 at Herndon Stadium. It was the fourth time in four meetings Atlanta has beaten Washington (1-2-0, 3 points) with a goal in the final 10 minutes. Mullinix, making her first appearance this season after recovering from shoulder surgery last October, came on in the 64th minute after starter Dawn Greathouse was hurt in a collision with Beat forward Emily Burt. Greathouse, her left shoulder and hip in pain, was stretchered off the field and taken to the hospital for evaluation. The game featured the first meeting between two sets of twins in major North American professional sports. Washington’s Jacqui and Skylar Little battled Atlanta’s Julie and Nancy Augustyniak for three minutes. Nancy Augustyniak entered the game in the 73rd minute; Jacqui Little departed in the 76th. In other games: Philadelphia 2 New York 1: Kelly Smith’s 89th-minute penalty kick enabled the Charge (2-0-0, 6 points) to spoil the Power’s home opener on a chilly afternoon before 4,203 at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Smith’s second goal this season determined the outcome after New York goalkeeper Saskia Webber, traded from Philadelphia during the offseason, took down Charge forward Marinette Pichon in the Power box. Webber was ejected for the foul, and Smith beat “reserve” goalkeeper Nicole Williams with her kick. The Power (1-2-0, 3 points) was without forwards Tiffeny Milbrett and Minna Mustonen, in San Jose for the U.S.-Finland match. Their replacements hooked up for a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, with Emily Janss scoring her second goal this season from an Emily Stauffer feed. Rookie Mary-Frances Monroe evened things in the 32nd minute, firing home the rebound from 10 yards after Webber punched away a Zhao Lihong corner kick. Carolina 2 San Jose 1: Hege Riise’s 85th-minute free kick to the upper-left corner from 20 yards carried the Courage (2-0-0, 6 points), the worst team in the WUSA in 2001, past the defending champions in the first game of a WUSA/U.S. national team doubleheader before 11,990 at Spartan Stadium. The victory was the Courage’s second on the road, both in the closing minutes. It won in San Diego two weeks earlier on an 87th-minute own goal. Goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill, the hero of the first win, gave another outstanding performance. Danielle Fotopoulos netted her second goal of the season in the sixth minute, first-timing a rebound from close range after Unni Lehn’s shot deflected off Dianne Alagich and was knocked away by Kelly Lindsey. The CyberRays (1-2-0, 3 points) pulled even in the 71st minute, with Katia finishing from a beautiful Theresa Wagner pass that sliced past three defenders. San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene, who got a hand on Riise’s winning free kick but couldn’t redirect it over the crossbar, also played for the U.S. national team in its 3-0 victory over Finland. San Diego 2 Boston 2: Rookie Shauna Rohbock scored a pair of first-half goals, but the Breakers (1-1-1, 4 points) battled back both times to earn a draw with the visiting Spirit (1-1-1, 4 points) before 6,747 at Nickerson Field. Bettina Wiegmann’s 47th-minute penalty kick, after San Diego defender Fan Yunjie fouled Sarah Yohe in the box, was the decisive goal. Rohbock scored in the eighth and 43rd minutes, with rookie Lori Lindsey earning assists on both. Maren Meinert’s second goal this season, a 14th-minute finish after Wiegmann forced Shannon Boxx into turning the ball over, answered Rohbock’s first tally. Lindsey was ejected after picking up her second yellow card in the 84th minute. Both teams were missing three starters because of the U.S.-Finland match in San Jose. Boston was without defender Jena Kluegel and midfielders Kristine Lilly and Angela Hucles. San Diego played without defender Joy Fawcett, midfielder Julie Foudy and forward Shannon MacMillan.
