Philadelphia's lead in the WUSA standings was trimmed to two points after a scoreless draw Saturday with visiting San Jose in which star English forward Kelly Smith suffered a knee injury. The defensive battle left the first-place Charge (5-1-1) with 16 points after seven games, just two ahead of Carolina (4-1-2, 14 points), which pulled away in the second half to a 4-1 victory over visiting New York. German forward Birgit Prinz, making her WUSA debut after leading FFC Frankfurt to the European women's club title, scored the third goal in the Courage's win. Atlanta, the WUSA's last-place team the first month of the season, moved within three points of the lead with its third successive victory, a 2-0 triumph at San Diego. In Saturday's WUSA action: Boston 0 Washington 0: The Breakers (2-3-3, 9 points) couldn't turn their dominance into a goal as Kristine Lilly missed a penalty kick and Washington goalkeeper Siri Mullinix made 13 saves before 21,539 in an MLS/WUSA doubleheader at CMGI Field. Lilly's 33rd-minute penalty try, created when Skylar Little fouled Dagny Mellgren in the box, sailed high. Boston outshot the Freedom (2-4-2, 8 points), 24-6, and dodged an apparent goal by Abby Wambach in the 53rd minute. Wambach was whistled for fouling Breakers goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. Atlanta 2 San Diego 0: Charmaine Hooper netted her fourth goal of the season and Homare Sawa scored her first as the visiting Beat (4-3-1, 13 points) extended its unbeaten streak to four games with an impressive performance before 5,815 at Torero Stadium. Hooper tallied in the 21st minute, running onto a sweet ball over the top from Sawa after Spirit rookie Lori Lindsey lost the ball at midfield. The Canadian striker beat San Diego goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo to the feed. Sawa's 74th-minute strike, an 8-yard volley from a Kylie Bivens cross, doubled the advantage. Lindsey fired high and then wide six minutes apart in the first half, the best chances for San Diego (2-4-2, 8 points). Philadelphia 0 San Jose 0: The WUSA's most stylish attacks couldn't beat the league's top two defenses, with the defending champion earning a road draw with the league leader. The midfield battle generated few scoring chances, and the best — a Kim Clark header for the CyberRays (3-3-2, 11 points) in the 79th minute and a Zhao Lihong shot for Philly (5-1-1, 16 points) in the 82nd — sailed over the net. Philadelphia, with French forward Marinette Pichon gone for national team duty, used a 4-5-1 alignment. The teams' defensive postures led to only six shots on goal. Smith, superb this season for the Charge, sustained a knee injury in the 72nd minute. Carey Dorn, marking Smith at the time, said a loud crack was heard when she fell. An MRI test will determine damage. Carolina 4 New York 1: Danielle Slaton and Prinz scored two minutes apart as the Courage (4-1-2, 14 points) took charge in a tight contest before 5,156 at SAS Stadium. The game was delayed 45 minutes by a lightning storm. Unni Lehn scored her first WUSA goal and added an assist for Carolina, which also got a goal and assist from Danielle Fotopoulos. Carla Overbeck made her first start of 2002, playing 45 minutes in the center of the Courage defense. Lehn struck from a Fotopoulos cross just before halftime, and Carolina made it 3-0 as Slaton tallied in the 60th minute, her second goal in as many weeks, and Prinz in the 62nd. Tiffeny Milbrett's fourth goal of the season got the last-place Power (2-5-1, 7 points) on the scoreboard in the 66th minute, but Fotopoulos' fourth of the year extended Carolina's advantage seven minutes later.
