WUSA allocated 19 of its 20 founding players, who won the World Cup for the United States last summer, plus five U.S. pool players to its eight teams. The league hopes to start play next spring. Carla Overbeck won’t play in the league’s first season because she’s planning on having a baby after the Olympics. The U.S. captain says she’ll serve as a consultant for WUSA and will play in the second year. WUSA gave three starters to San Diego, which has Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan and Joy Fawcett. Mia Hamm, who lived in Virginia as a child for a few years, will play for Washington, D.C., and San Jose native Brandi Chastain will stay in the San Francisco Bay Area team. The five non-World Cup players are Nikki Serlenga (Atlanta), Mandy Clemens (Philadelphia), LaKeysia Beene (San Francisco Bay Area), Siri Mullinix (Washington, D.C.) and Michelle French (Washington, D.C.). Former Santa Clara stars Serlenga and Clemens lost to LaKeysia Beene and Notre Dame in last year’s College Cup semifinals. Mullinix has become the U.S. national team starter while Briana Scurry (Atlanta) recovers from shin splints. Like Serlenga, French, a former Portland star, is in the running for the U.S. Olympic team.
