The remaining 20 games of the WUSA’s national television broadcast schedule on TNT and CNN/SI will also air in China on China Central Television. CCTV is the national TV network of the PeopleÆs Republic of China and it has been in business for more than 40 years. It has eight channels (CCTV-5 is the sports channel) and broadcasts over 138 hours of programs daily to over 900 million people. There are over 280 million TV sets in China. TNT and CNN/Sports Illustrated have a four-year agreement to air a 22-game nationally-televised package. All 87 WUSA games are telecast this year, with the remaining 65 airing on regional sports networks and other outlets including: AT&T 3, CNNSI-Regional, Cox 4, Comcast SportsNet (Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.), and CN8, Fox Sports Bay Area, Fox Sports NY, Fox Sports South, MSG Network, Metro Channels, KICU (San Jose) and WJAL (Washington, D.C.). “The WUSA was the first league to successfully attract Chinese athletes to come and play in this country, while still being eligible for their national team,” said Lee Berke, chief of television & marketing for the WUSA. “The fact that we have six of the top Chinese players in our league, including FIFA co-Player-of-the-Century Sun Wen, made it a natural fit between the WUSA and CCTV.”
