Dagny Mellgren scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season and Maren Meinert assisted on three goals as the Boston Breakers closed in on their first WUSA playoff berth with a 3-2 win over New York in Uniondale, N.Y.

Kristine Lilly added her second goal of the season, and in as many weeks, as the Breakers (8-4-7, 31 points) were guaranteed their first winning campaign while stopping the Power's five-game home unbeaten streak before 4,467 at Mitchel Athletic Field.

The Breakers, who are unbeaten in eight games, would nail down a postseason berth if San Jose loses Saturday at Washington or Carolina loses Sunday at San Diego.

New York (7-9-4, 25 points), which has only one game remaining, will be eliminated from playoff contention if San Diego tops Carolina.

The Breakers jumped to an early 2-0 advantage on goals by Lilly in the second minute and Mellgren in the 12th, both from Meinert feeds.

Cheryl Salisbury redirected a Tiffeny Milbrett free kick to halve New York's deficit at the start of the second half, but Mellgren netted her second goal in the 90th minute. Late substitute Emily Janss added a stoppage-time goal for the Power.

Mellgren and Meinert are joint leaders in the WUSA scoring race with 28 points, one more than Washington's Mia Hamm.
