Brandi Chastain’s Bay Area CyberRays will battle Mia Hamm’s Washington Freedom on April 14 in the opening match of the WUSA’s inaugural season. The Freedom will host the opener at RFK Stadium. The game will be nationally televised live at 2 p.m. ET, but the league has yet to announce which television network will carry the game. The CyberRaysÆ home opener is set for 2 p.m. PT, Sunday, April 29, against the Boston Breakers. It is one of six Sunday matches -û five in the afternoon -û at Spartan. Also on the home schedule are four evening matches, three on Wednesdays and one on a Thursday. “We favor Sunday afternoon matches because our fans are families with soccer-playing children,” CyberRays general manager Marlene Bjornsrud said. “Playing on Sunday afternoons avoids conflicts with youth league matches, which are usually played on Saturdays.” The Bay Area is the first team to announce its 21-game tentative schedule, which features 10 home games to be played at Spartan Stadium. WUSA teams will play each other three times apiece the first season. That means some opponents will visit Spartan twice while others will come to San Jose once. Except for the CyberRays-Freedom opener, game dates and times are subject to change because of television commitments.
