Frenchwoman Marinette Pichon, who led the Philadelphia Charge into the WUSA semifinals, and rookie Danielle Slaton, instrumental in the Carolina Courage's run to Saturday's title game, were honored by the league on Wednesday.

Pichon, who scored 14 goals and dished off one assist for the Charge, was selected the WUSA Offensive Player of the Year in balloting by WUSA players, coaches and general managers and the media. The French striker accounted for 40 percent of Philly's scoring, taking charge after playmaker Kelly Smith suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear at the start of June and guiding the club to second place.

Slaton, playing in the middle and on the left flank, anchored a Courage defense that improved from the worst in the league in Year 1 (allowing 1.9 goals per game) to the fourth-best in the league (allowing 1.27 goals per game) and was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Pichon and Slaton also were selected to the All-WUSA first team. Pichon was joined on the All-WUSA teams by teammates Jennifer Tietjen and Erica Iverson (first team) and Zhao Lihong and Jenny Benson (second team).

Slaton was joined by Birgit Prinz, Hege Riise and Kristen Luckenbill (first team) and Danielle Fotopoulos (second team).

Tietjen and Iverson also were finalists for the defensive award. Prinz and San Jose's Katia were finalists for the offensive honor.

Boston swept the other honors announced Wednesday, with General Manager Joe Cummings being names Executive of the Year and the Breakers getting the Team Fair Play and Team Community Service awards.

The MVP award — Riise, Prinz and Pichon are finalists — will be announced Thursday.
