The New York Power, playing before its largest home crowd of the season, moved into a tie for second place Saturday with a 3-1 victory over San Jose.
Atlanta's scoreless tie with host Carolina gave it 16 points, too, and one point separates the top four teams heading into the WUSA's All-Star week. Boston (5-3-2, 17 points) is on top in the standings, and Washington (5-3-1, 16 points) shares second place with the Power and Beat. The Breakers and Freedom are idle this weekend.
Philadelphia won its first home game of the season, beating San Diego, 2-0, on an day every WUSA squad was missing key players because of the U.S. women's friendly against Ireland in Salt Lake City.
Saturday's highlights:
Philadelphia 2 San Diego 0: The Charge (3-5-2, 11 points), after losing five of its first six matches, extended its unbeaten streak to four games behind Marinette Pichon's seventh goal of the season before 6,345 at Villanova Stadium.
Goalkeeper Melissa Moore extended her shutout streak to 249 minutes, spoiling San Diego coach Omid Namazi's return to Philadelphia. Namazi was until joining the Spirit last October the player-coach of the Major Indoor Soccer League's Philadelphia Kixx, which he guided to the league title last year.
Pichon scored from a Melanie Hoffmann feed in the 31st minute and contributed to Rhi Tanaka's own goal 19 minutes earlier. The French star's pressure led Tanaka to send the ball over goalkeeper Jen Branam's head and into her net while attempting a backpass.
The Spirit (3-3-4, 13 points) dropped its second game in eight days to Philadelphia, losing the season series. San Diego has never won at Villanova.
Carolina 0 Atlanta 0: The Courage (3-5-2, 11 points), after losing five of its first six matches, extended its unbeaten streak to four games — just like Philly — behind Kristen Luckenbill's fine performance in the nets before 5,285 at SAS Stadium.
Atlanta (4-2-4, 16 points) also got a strong showing from its netminder, Melanie Wilson, who stepped in for U.S. keeper Briana Scurry.
The Beat nearly broke the deadlock in the 90th minute, but Charmaine Hooper's close-range volley from Maribel Dominguez's feed sailed just over the crossbar.
Danielle Fotopoulos, named to the American Stars for Thursday's All-Star Game by Commissioner Tony DiCicco, had a solid chance seconds later, but she mishandled Birgit Prinz's pass and Wilson charged out to smother the ball.
New York 3 San Jose 1: Rookie Christie Welsh scored two second-half goals and the Power (5-5-1, 16 points) extended its unbeaten streak to three games while passing the midpoint of its season.
Emily Janss tallied for New York in the first half — a volley from a Margaret Tietjen's cross — and rookie Katie Antongiovanni's first WUSA goal, in the 84th minute, ended San Jose's goalless skid at 292 minutes, more than three full games.
Antongiovanni's goal ended Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber's 275-minute shutout streak. She set a team record, passing Gao Hong's 222, in the 32nd minute.
The Power won the season series with San Jose (4-6-0, 12 points) with its second win in seven days over the CyberRays. New York was 0-6-1 vs. San Jose entering the season.
Welsh netted her fifth and sixth goals of the season, finishing Tammy Pearman's through ball in the 77th minute and beating goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse 1-on-1 again Shannon Boxx carried the ball 35 yards.
The match, which featured 34 fouls, drew 5,727 to Mitchel Athletic Field, the Power's first home match this season with more than 5,000 attendance.
