Bad break for CyberRay Bay Area CyberRays midfielder Lauren Molinaro broke her ankle on the fourth day of preseason training camp at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif. The former Connecticut star is expected to be out for two months. The CyberRays, who selected her in the third round of the February supplemental draft, will retain her rights and may recall her when she’s fit. Molinaro, 21, is the youngest player on the Bay Area’s 27-woman roster. “We were at the end of practice Sunday morning, and it was raining, and we were doing slide tackles,” she said. “There was no contact with another player or anything, just three balls on the ground. On the second one, my cleats must have stopped in the mud, but my leg kept going. It was just a freak accident.” CyberRays trainer Heidi Peterson said the fracture was to the medial malleolus, or lower end of the tibia, which is the main weight-bearing bone in the lower leg. Her right foot was placed in a walking boot by Dr. Martin Trieb, team physician. Molinaro plans to return home to Willington, Conn., where she will complete her student teaching during her rehabilitation period. “IÆm trying to look at this optimistically, but to put it in plain English, it stinks,” she said. “I looked at the CyberRays as a great opportunity. I love all the people out here, and I love the area. IÆm disappointed and upset, but at the same time I know I will get a second chance. IÆm going to rehab it and do the best I can. I think things will turn out positively.” Molinaro was a tri-captain last fall at 13th-ranked Connecticut, scoring three goals and recording two assists. At high school in Ellicott City, Md., she played soccer, lacrosse and ran track. Charge comings and goings Forward Ruth Van’t Land-Parkes, the team’s fourth-round pick in the December draft, decided she did not want to participate in the league this year and left camp on March 2 … German defender Doris Fitschen was a late arrival at camp due to prior commitments in Germany. Courage goes bowling Carolina’s March 3 training at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C., was rained out, so Coach Marcia McDermott took the Courage bowling. Captain Carla Overbeck was the top bowler on the day. Carolina will play a couple of exhibitions before it travels to the league-wide training camp in Chula Vista, Calif. The Courage takes on the Boston Breakers on March 12 in Greensboro, N.C., and the Washington Freedom on March 17 in Germantown, Md.
