2002 record: 11-4-6 (semifinalist)

SCOUTING REPORT

No WUSA team has upgraded its attack quite so deftly as the Charge, which already was fairly explosive, especially with Kelly Smith back on the field. Philly's got extraordinary depth, a sensational defensive scheme and – with Smith and 2002 MVP Marinette Pichon – players who can take over games. In short, the Charge – twice a semifinal loser – has all the ingredients of a championship squad. Philadelphia's depth, bolstered by a strong college draft and the acquisitions of German forward Melanie Hoffmann and Czech midfielder Pavlina Scasna, could be the difference this year: World Cup preparations won't impact the Charge as severely as its foes. Hoffmann, Pichon and Smith seem an enticingly flashy trio, and Mark Krikorian's got enough options to overcome Zhao Lihong's departure. Three-quarters of the prized back line are back, all but Soccer America Defensive Player of Year Erica Iverson. Jenny Benson and Jen Tietjen-Prozzo – and holding midfielder Stacey Tullock – are coming off breakthrough years. Heather Mitts could see time in the middle. Incumbent Melissa Moore is battling heralded rookie Hope Solo for the goalkeeper job.
