SCOUTING REPORT

It's tempting to think Aly Wagner might be the Spirit's savior. The No. 1 selection in the college draft is a genuine wild card, a playmaker with such singular ability and influence that she certainly appears capable of turning the team's dismal fortunes around. The reality is darker, unless new coach Omid Namazi can properly address weaknesses in the back. San Diego, at the very least, should be a lot of fun to watch. Wagner, possibly the planet's top passer, has plenty of targets to choose among. Scotswoman Julie Fleeting made a strong impression late last year, and similar returns are expected from Canadian national-teamer Christine Latham. Shannon MacMillan, whose WUSA play rarely has stood up to her international standard, stands to benefit most. Namazi favors a 3-5-2 that would station as holding midfielders Julie Foudy and Brazilian teen Daniela. Joy Fawcett is a consummate defender, but there's little depth on a marginally talented back line. More roster moves – about a dozen players from 2002 have departed – are anticipated. Jaime Pagliarulo must rebound from last year's dismal performances for the Spirit to have any chance.
