The Canberra Times has reported that the Bay Area CyberRays have made former Australian women’s national team coach Tom Sermanni an assistant coach to head coach Ian Sawyers. Sermanni, most recently the coach of the Canberra Cosmos men’s club, resigned from the Cosmos on Feb. 19 to take the CyberRays job. The Australian newspaper also reported that the New York Power approached Sermanni earlier in the year about a coaching position but negotiations collapsed. Sermanni coached the Matildas at the 1995 World Cup in Sweden, where they lost to Sawyers’ wife, Julie Foudy, and the United States, 4-1. San Diego to train at UCSD The San Diego Spirit will use Warren Field at UC San Diego as its training field. The club will also use university facilities on campus for team meetings as well as weight training. “The facilities at UC San Diego are first class and they give us a wonderful foundation to prepare our team for the season,” Spirit general manager Kevin Crow said. “UCSD provides its athletes with marvelous facilities and we are excited to be able to share in that as we train some of the best soccer players in the world.”
