San Diego captain Julie Foudy's stoppage-time penalty kick finished an exhilarating 5-4 triumph over visiting Boston and gave the Spirit its first WUSA victory since May 19. Chrisy McCann fouled Zhang Ouying to set up Foudy's 92nd-minute spot kick, her second goal of the match, as San Diego (3-7-3, 12 points) pulled out a wild affair in which each team twice let leads get away. Kristine Lilly scored two goals and added an assist for the Breakers (3-6-5, 14 points). The combatants set WUSA records for most goals in a half (six, in the first 45 minutes) and a game (nine) before 6,149 at Torero Stadium. The teams meet again Wednesday at Nickerson Field in Boston. Lilly gave Boston a 13th minute lead on a free kick, but San Diego scored twice in the next 10 minutes — an 18-yard blast by Shannon Boxx following a Monica Gonzalez turnover and Foudy's header from a Sherrill Kester cross — to take advantage. Lilly evened things in the 28th minute after blocking Joy Fawcett's clearance, and Maren Meinert — with her seventh goal of the season — fired the Breakers ahead with a 30-yard shot eight minutes later. The first and third Boston goals slipped through Spirit goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo's hands, and she almost fumbled another into her net. She was removed at halftime for Carly Smolak. Fawcett tied the score at 3 from a Boxx chip three minutes later, and rookie Lori Lindsey gave the Spirit another lead from a Shannon MacMillan corner kick in the 56th minute. Sarah Yohe made it 4-4 10 minutes later after Fawcett, marking her, stumbled on Angela Hucles' service. SATURDAY'S SUMMARY July 6 at San Diego San Diego 5 Boston 4.
