Shannon MacMillan and Chinese forward Zhang Ouying each had a pair of goals and an assist as the San Diego Spirit eclipsed WUSA scoring records in a 6-1 rout of visiting New York on Saturday before 5,216 at Torero Stadium. The Boston Breakers captured their first WUSA victory of 2002, beating visiting Atlanta, 3-1, in front of 6,305 at Nickerson Field. The Beat, unbeaten in its first six games last season, fell to 0-2. San Diego (1-1-0, 3 points) set league records for most goals in a match and margin of victory. Philadelphia, in a 5-1 win over Carolina last August, held both marks; Atlanta shared the win-margin record (4-0 over San Jose in a 2001 regular-season finale). The Spirit also set league records for most assists (8) and points (20) in a game, and the teams tied the mark for most goals by two teams in one match (7, set in Carolina’s 4-3 win vs. San Diego last May). Zhang scored in the third and 47th minutes and MacMillan in the 17th and 40th as the Spirit dominated play throughout the first half and made the most of its opportunities. The San Diego defense, especially Fan Yunjie and midfielders Shannon Boxx and Julie Foudy, bottled up the Power attack and kept 2001 WUSA MVP Tiffeny Milbrett from causing damage. Milbrett has not scored in four matches against the Spirit. The Spirit rolled up a 6-0 lead before New York forward Emily Janss volleyed home a poor clearance by rookie defender Amy Sauer in the 82nd minute. A seventh San Diego goal, by Shauna Rohbock early in the match, was disallowed because of an offside call. MacMillan’s goals were tremendous. She volleyed a bouncing ball, from a Zhang cross, past Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber into the upper-left corner for her first strike. On the second she played a short chip to Jen Mascaro to get out of a triple team, eluded her cover for a return pass, then beat Tammy Pearman to knock in the rebound after Webber stopped her first shot. MacMillan also set up Zhang’s second goal, just after halftime, with a feed behind the defense. Zhang, with three goals and an assist, is the early WUSA scoring leader with seven points. New York fell to 1-1-0, 3 points. Boston 3 Atlanta 1: Angela Hucles scored a goal and added an assist and Dagny Mellgren finished a beautiful long ball from Christine McCann as the Breakers (1-1-0, 3 points) opened their home slate with a victory, Mellgren fired Boston ahead in the 10th minute, Hucles scored from a give-and-go with Sarah Yohe in the 35th, and Kristine Lilly — who missed the Breakers’ opener last week with a sore back — finished a Hucles feed in the 50th for a 3-0 advantage. Wang Liping scored Atlanta’s goal, off a poor clearance by goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, in the 51st minute. LeBlanc made sensational saves on Kelly Cagle in the 30th minute and Cindy Parlow in the 56th to stymie the Beat (0-2-0, 0 points). SUMMARIES San Diego 6 New York 1.
