New York star Tiffeny Milbrett scored three goals to give New York a 3-1 victory over the Boston Breakers Thursday night at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. New York takes over sole possession of first place with 22 points from a 6-1-4 record. The Breakers drop to 3-5-3 on the season (12 pts.) and remain in sixth place. Milbrett became the first player in the league to notch a hat trick and pushed her league-leading points tally to 22 (from 10 goals and 2 assists). Her first goal tied Boston in the 45th minute. She put the game away in the second half. Milbrett’s ninth goal of the season came at the 76th minute mark to give the Power a 2-1 lead. Milbrett broke through the Boston defense and flicked a soft ball towards an open goal. The ball slowly crossed the goal line as a Breakers defender gave chase. In the 85th minute, Milbrett outran the defense and lofted the ball in to the net for her final goal. Boston had some great chances in the second half but struggled to convert. Breakers forward Meotis Erikson slid a ball through the defense to teammate Elie Foster, who sailed her shot over the crossbar. Minutes later, Kristine Lilly’s free kick to the near post was punched out by New York goalkeeper Gao Hong. Lilly had another shot in the 66th minute that hit the near post. Chances came early for the Breakers in the first half. The Breakers had the first opportunity, but Gao handled Lilly’s 12th-minute shot with ease. Boston’s best chance came when Keri Raygor struck a ball to the far post in the 24th minute. Gao dove and got a hand on the ball, which trickled away from goal. The Breakers finally got on the board in the 26th minute. Erikson flicked a ball over her head to oncoming teammate Angela Hucles. Hucles, carrying two Power defenders on her side, struck the ball past Gao for a 1-0 lead. New York would even the game in the 45th minute on a defensive breakdown by Boston. A dangerous ball was sent toward the goal. Boston defender Kate Sobrero headed the ball by Boston goalkeeper Tracy Ducar, who was coming out to smother the ball. The ball bounced away from both Boston players and Milbrett chipped the ball into the goal for a 1-1 game. June 22 in Uniondale, N.Y.
