First-half goals from Cindy Parlow and Marci Miller gave the Atlanta Beat a 2-0 win over host Philadelphia. The win propels Atlanta (2-0-3, 9 points) into a first-place tie with New York (also 2-0-3, 9). The loss is the first for the Charge (2-1-2, tied for 2nd place, 8). Parlow scored her first goal of the season when she corralled a loose ball outside of the Charge penalty area and laced a 25-yard shot over the head of Charge goalkeeper Saskia Webber. In the 40th minute, Atlanta defender Dayna Smith sent a free kick into the Philadelphia penalty area from 30 yards out. Miller leapt over the defense and sent a header on goal. The ball bounced off of the goalpost, off of Webber’s back and into the goal. Former Bay Area CyberRays midfielder Amy Walsh started in place of Atlanta midfielder Nikki Serlenga, who has a nagging right hamstring strain that bothered her in pre-game warmups. Walsh almost scored in her debut, ringing a header off the crossbar in the 29th minute. Philadelphia’s best chance came in the 48th minute, when Charge forward Mandy Clemens beat Atlanta goalkeeper Briana Scurry to a long through ball but fired just over the crossbar.
