Danielle Fotopoulos started the day on the bench but came on in the second half to score two goals, including the game winner, against San Diego in Carolina’s first win of the season. The 4-3 win in Chapel Hill, N.C., leaves the Courage in last place with four points from a 1-4-1 record but ties the club with the Bay Area, which also has four points. Sixth-place San Diego falls to 1-3-2 (5 points). Carolina coach Marcia McDermott shook up her lineup, partly out of necessity. Tiffany Roberts, who has played in midfield and in the defense, started at left back because of an eye injury to regular starter Wen Lirong. McDermott started Silvana Burtini in place of Fotopoulos, one of the league’s founding players. The move paid off as the Canadian international scored the game’s first goal with a header in the 27th minute. Fotopoulos then replaced Burtini in the 63rd minute. Courage midfielder Erin Baxter, replacing Roberts as Carolina’s defensive midfielder, shadowed Julie Foudy and kept the Spirit playmaker under control, particularly in the first half. San Diego’s normally stingy defense, which had given up just four goals prior to the match, opened up on a wet Fetzer Field. Carolina created numerous scoring chances, as it had in most of its games this season. The difference in this game was that Carolina finished four of them. May 26 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
