The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) announced it will conduct its first-ever Combine and Draft Dec. 4-11, 2000, in Boca Raton, Fla. The WUSA begins play in mid-April 2000. Invitations to approximately 200 players are in the process of being sent out. League personnel, GM’s and coaches from all eight teams will be on hand to evaluate and scout. The event begins just one day after the conclusion of the Women’s College Cup. The semifinals and final of NCAA Division I women’s soccer are scheduled for Dec. 1-3 in San Jose. Acting Commissioner Tony DiCicco and Vice President of Player Relations Lauren Gregg selected the final pool of players who were invited after an exhaustive nationwide search. Player registration and physicals will take place the first two days of the Combine, which will be followed by five full days of games and workouts. “We are truly excited about the group of players we are inviting to the combine,” Gregg said. “The difficult decisions we are faced with are clear demonstrations of the quality and the depth of the player pool. Without question the time is right for a women’s professional league.” After five days of competition, the general managers and coaches will commence the first WUSA Combine Draft on Dec. 10 and will conclude the draft the next day. There will be between 12 and 15 rounds.
