Chinese phenom Pu Wei notched a pair of assists and Abby Wambach netted her first WUSA goal on Sunday as the visiting Washington Freedom drilled San Diego, 3-0, before 6,103 at Torero Stadium. The victory sent Washington (2-2-0, 6 points) into third place in the WUSA, three points behind unbeaten Philadelphia and Carolina. Defending champion San Jose also moved within three points of the leaders with a 1-0 triumph at New York. Pretinha's second goal of the season, from a feed from fellow Brazilian Katia, lifted the CyberRays (2-2-0, 6 points) before 4,016 at Mitchel Athletic Complex. A look at Sunday's matches: Washington 3 San Diego 0: The Freedom got first-half goals from Jacqui Little and Wambach and a strong defensive effort to dominate the Spirit (1-2-1, 4 points). Little's 20-yard blast in the 22nd minute gave Washington an advantage, and Wambach — the No. 2 selection in February's draft — finished a cross from Skylar Little (Jacqui's twin) in the 38th. Pu, a 21-year-old Chinese star, picked up assists on both goals. Monica Gerardo converted a 72nd-minute penalty kick after San Diego Florence Omagbemi upended Wambach in the Spirit box. San Jose 1 New York 0: A nifty feed by Katia led to the only goal the CyberRays needed, and goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene and good fortune combined to keep the Power (1-3-0, 3 points) out of the nets. Pretinha tallied in the 14th minute after Katia split two defenders with a diagonal pass to the top of the box. Pretinha took in into space and slotted it to goalkeeper Nicole Williams' left. New York dominated play early, using counterattacks to threaten Beene, until San Jose coach Ian Sawyers switched from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 alignment, with forward Brandi Chastain moving into midfield. Beene made two fine stops in the first five minutes, and New York blew several strong chances, with Linda Ormen twice delivering subpar crosses with Milbrett open in front of the net, and Anita Rapp nodding another Ormen cross over the bar while alone in front.
