By Scott French, Senior Editor HOME COOKING: Philadelphia and Carolina won their home openers on Saturday to improve to 3-0-0 and increase their advantage to three points after four weeks of the WUSA season. Every other club has played four games. Carolina's mastery of the mighty (but struggling horribly) Atlanta Beat, eking out a 1-0 victory on Tiffany Roberts' 72nd-minute header at SAS Stadium. The Courage is 3-0-1 lifetime against the Beat. The goal was the first in the WUSA for Roberts, who turned 25 on Sunday. Philadelphia introduced its new turf at Villanova in a 4-2 triumph over Boston. An own goal by Breakers defender Michaela Rooney — a “reserve” player seeing action because of injuries — broke a 2-2 tie forged a minute earlier on Kristine Lilly's goal. VIVA LA FRANCE: Frenchwoman Marinette Pichon picked up her first WUSA points with a goal and assist in Philly's victory, clinically finishing a fine through ball from Liu Ailing in the 48th minute and setting up Mandy Clemens with an 82nd-minute cross. Pichon was the key figure in the Charge's victory a week earlier, setting up Kelly Smith's winning penalty kick at New York. BEST GOAL: Hard to beat Jacqui Little's 18-yard blast midway through the first half of Washington's 3-0 romp at San Diego. Little's shot skimmed off the bottom of the crossbar and kissed the post en route to the side-netting. “I meant to cross it, and this time it went perfectly in,” Little said. “But, hey, a goal is a goal.” UNEMPOWERED: Tiffeny Milbrett bobbleheads and the defending champion San Jose CyberRays weren't enough to lure many spectators to Sunday's New York Power match. Only 4,016 — the smallest WUSA gathering this season and the fourth-smallest in league history — made it out to Mitchel Athletic Complex for the 'Rays 1-0 victory. That's 187 fewer than showed up for the Power's home opener last week against Philadelphia. That crowd, 4,203, is the fifth-smallest since the league kicked off nearly 13 months ago. The five smallest WUSA crowds belong to New York, and Power fans seem especially disinterested in the Charge. The bottom three, all from last season: 2,348 (Charge at Power, May 13), 3,104 (Charge at Power, June 17) and 3,182 (Courage at Power, May 6).
