BY RIDGE MAHONEY, senior editor Forward Eric Wynalda has left the Galaxy and intends to play for the A-League Charleston Battery. “We’ve agreed to terms and we just have a few personal things to work out,” Wynalda said Monday of his negotiations with the Battery. “I told [President] Nigel Cooper and [Coach] Chris Ramsey I will sign with them and I’m keeping to my word.” According to Wynalda, “Charleston is offering me three or four times” a contract worth $43,000 tendered by MLS. “MLS was not willing to come off that number,” he said. “It was take it or leave it and I said, ‘I’m not taking it.'” Wynalda was claimed by the Galaxy on waivers but had not signed a new contract with MLS. He earned about $65,000 plus bonuses last year with the Fire, which waived him after the 2001 season. He left the Galaxy during its tour of Chile last month to pursue an inquiry from a Chinese club that fell through. Coach Sigi Schmid allowed him to return to training, but he was not one of 23 players Schmid used last week in a match with the U.S. U-18s. “It would have been great to end my career in Los Angeles,” said Wynalda, who was born in Southern California and recently bought a home in the area. “I would have liked nothing more than to play there but I guess it’s not going to happen and it’s time to move on.” The Battery will have one of the more illustrious rosters in the A-League this season. It has signed former Irish international Terry Phelan and Canadian defender Mark Watson.
