San Jose Clash forward Eric Wynalda will undergo arthroscopic surgery April 16 to repair a small cartilage tear in his left knee. The procedure is not expected to delay Wynalda’s return to action, according to San Jose GM Peter Bridgwater and U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson. Wynalda sprained the tibiofibular ligament in his left knee when he collided with Dallas Burn goalkeeper Garth Lagerwey during a shootout attempt on April 5. The cartilage tear, in the lateral meniscus, may or may not be related to the April 5 incident. “If there’s additional damage, obviously we want it taken care of right away, but even if it’s an old injury, now is a good time to clean it up, while he’s unable to play anyway,” Bridgwater said. “The important thing is that we do what’s right for Eric, that he gets back to the Clash as soon as possible, and that he’s ready for the World Cup.” Wynalda is expected to be held out of training until the first week of May and then will need to train 1-2 weeks before playing in a match. He hopes to return to the field May 16, when San Jose hosts Miami and the USA meets Macedonia in a doubleheader at Spartan Stadium. “I’m just glad that whatever else is wrong, we’ll be able to take care of it and it won’t keep me out of any more games with the Clash or any more training with the national team,” Wynalda said.
