U-18 BOYS Led by head coach Mitch Murray, the U.S. Boys’ U-18 national team held off a late comeback charge by Mexico to finish the Birmingham International Festival Cup with a 2-0-1 record and earn second place. The USA beat Jamaica in their opener, 1-0, fell to eventual champion Morocco 1-0 and concluded tournament play with the victory over Mexico. The six-game, round-robin tournament was played as part of the Birmingham International Festival, where the local community has annually staged a festival in honor of a different country for 49 years. Fittingly, this year’s Festival theme was “A Salute to Morocco.” The U.S. U-18s will regroup on May 20 for an 11-day foreign tour to France and Holland, where the team will participate in the St. Martin d’Heres Tournament on May 21-24 (Grenoble, France) and the Terborg International Tournament on May 27-30 (Terborg, Holland). The U-21s began their five-game sweep with a 3-0 win over 14-time NCAA champions University of North Carolina in an exhibition Friday. In tournament play, the USA defeated both Maryland and Virginia by the score of 3-0 on Saturday, and went on to rout Northwestern, 8-0, and then Navy, 6-0, in the final on Sunday. Santa Clara forward Mandy Clemens led the U.S. with seven goals, while Clemson’s Beth Keller added five of her own.
