A sold-out crowd of 1,350 watched the USA clinch the top seed in the medal round with a convincing 3-0 win over Canada in the final first-round match of the 1999 Pan American Games. The U.S. went ahead early when midfielder Lori Lindsey unleashed a 23-yard blast that blew by Canadian keeper Kathryn Clewley. Jena Kluegel’s corner kick from the right side sailed long and skidded out to Lindsay, whose left-footed bomb found the right-side netting. Canada’s star striker, Sara Barradas, entered the game with a tournament-high seven goals, but the U.S. defense never allowed her to enter the flow of the game. She took just three shots, none on goal. “I think that we played well in the back,” said U.S. coach Jay Hoffman. “The chances they got, we were able to shut down quickly.” Marcia Wallis and Kim Patrick combined to free Catherine Reddick for her second goal of the tourney just before halftime. Wallis took a pass from Patrick, and her eight-yard shot was saved by Clewley, but Wallis controlled the rebound and touched the ball to Reddick, who finished from six yards. Canada’s best chance came in the 51st minute, after a Reddick foul gave the Canadians a free kick from 30 yards out. Randee Hermus fired a shot from the restart and was able to get the ball past U.S. keeper Hope Solo, but it bounced off the crossbar. Shortly afterward, Patrick added her name to the scoresheet with a 35-yard bomb into the upper right corner for a 3-0 U.S. lead. The win means the U.S. will face Costa Rica in the semifinals on Aug. 2, while Canada will meet Mexico in the other match. The U.S. smashed the Costa Ricans, 6-0, in first-round play behind a pair of goals from Lauren Molinaro. July 31 in Winnipeg, Man. Canada 0 USA 3. Goals: Lindsey 8, Reddick 44, Patrick 53.
