The U.S. U-21 and U-18 girls’ national teams departed on a two-game tour of Europe March 5. Both teams will face Germany and Denmark, playing doubleheaders in Munich on March 10 and Copenhagen on March 13. It will be the first time that the two youth national teams have played doubleheaders abroad and the matches are the first foreign tour for the U-18 program, which was established last year. It is also the first foreign tour for the U-21s outside of the Nordic Cup. The U-18 squad, made up of the top high school juniors and seniors in the country, is coming off a victory at the eight-team U.S. Youth Soccer Cup at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in mid-February. The U-18s defeated a Under-19 USYSA national select team, 2-1, in the championship game in a tournament that also featured the U.S. U-16s, a USYSA U-17 national select team and the U-18 teams from China, Japan, Germany and Sweden. The U-21s are coming off convincing victories over Clemson University and the defending NCAA champion University of Florida last week in Orlando, Fla. The Americans have been grouped with Germany, Denmark and Finland at this summer’s Nordic Cup, which will be held in Iceland, and will get an early look at the teams that stand in their way of regaining the title. The Nordic Cup serves as the unofficial world championship for Under-21 women. The USA won the Nordic Cup in 1997, defeating Norway in sudden death overtime, 2-1, but lost last year’s final to Norway by the same 2-1 score. “This is an exciting time for our women’s national team program,” said U-21 coach Lauren Gregg, who will join the full national team in Portugal for the Algarve Cup following the matches. “This first trip abroad for our youth national teams is invaluable toward developing players for the future. It’s an historic tour and it’s exciting to see how our young players will compete in the international arena as they prepare to be the next stars for the USA.” Here are the two rosters for the European tour:
