The U.S. U-20 national team scored an emphatic 3-1 victory over Cameroon today, April 11, in their final Group E match of the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. The win clinches either first or second place for the U.S., who will have to wait until the conclusion of the evening matches to determine their final standing in Group E and their opponent in the Round of 16. The second victory of the tournament for the U.S. began with a goal in the 39th minute on perhaps the squad’s best combination play of the tournament. Taylor Twellman scored from six yards out on a splitting pass from John Thorrington (playing forward after lining up in the midfield in the USA’s first two games). The play began in the USA’s own half, with Steve Cherundolo doing all the work on defense and springing the attack forward, through Francisco Gomez and then on to Thorrington. In the 58th minute, Gomez flighted a free kick across the penalty area which was headed back across the goalmouth by defender Nick Garcia to Carlos Bocanegra who slotted the ball home. After Tim Howard was called for a five-second violation in the penalty area, Cameroon was able to halve the deficit with a goal off on an indirect free kick from within the penalty area in the 62nd minute. The U.S. sealed the historic victory in the 77th minute, with second-half substitute Shaun Tsakiris stealing the ball at midfield and slotting a perfect through ball onto the run of Twellman, who nailed his second goal of the match to the far post, past the Cameroon goalkeeper. USA– Howard, Califf, Bocanegra, Morrison (Pierce, 53), Cherundolo, Garcia, Gomez (Tsakiris, 73), Gibbs, Downing, Thorrington (Albright, 66), Twellman.
