As expected, Spanish champion Real Madrid on Monday named former Getafe coach Bernd Schuster as the club’s new head coach. What They’re Saying

“We all knew that Freddy was a talented kid and I felt that he was ready to wear the captain’s armband and take on a leadership role with this team. I couldn’t be happier with the way he has dealt with these circumstances. He had a superb performance against Poland and today, beyond his skill he always showed his desire, his heart. Great players succeed at the highest level and today was a great game for him, and he took the rest of the team with him today.”

— U.S. U-20 coach Thomas Rongen after Freddy Adu played on his second straight phenomenal game for the USA at the U-20 World Cup, leading it past Brazil, 2-1.

The Celeste led by only a goal until it added two goals in the final three minutes. Canada bombs at the Under-20 World Cup

Host Canada was ignominiously dumped from the Under-20 World Cup when it lost to Congo, 2-0, for its third straight shutout loss of the competition. Canada is the first host team in the 30-year history of the U-20 competition not to score a goal. All four African entrants and all four South American teams advanced to the U-20 World Cup. Scotland — winless in all three games — was the only European team not to advance.

[EXTENDED U.S. U-20 VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS] The USA has been the story of the Under-20 World Cup in Canada. The goals, all golazos, left the Americans on top of the U-20 scoring charts with nine goals in three games. Once again, Freddy Adu was brilliant against Brazil, and the U.S. goals — both scored by Jozy Altidore — spectacular. For Ridge Mahoney’s report and all the video highlights …
