Talk on Campus
Red-shirt juniors Doug Rappaport and Chris Brown, both standouts on the Massachusetts team that was the surprise of the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament, must decide whether to return in 2008 or pursue their post-graduate careers … It is rare that a women’s program is dropped, so members of the Western Nevada women’s JC program thought athletic director John Kinkella was joking when he called the players together in November to tell them the school was dropping the program … At 71, NJCAA Hall of Famer George Vizvary is still going strong at Ulster County Community College

MLS Stretches Top Teams Thin
As Major League Soccer adds more competitions, its best and most valuable clubs are being stretched thin, says Goal.com’s Pat Walsh. For example, MLS champ Houston could play more than 50 games next season, surpassing Bayern Munich’s 2006-07 tally of 47, while equaling that of Real Madrid. Like most European clubs, Bayern and Real have […]
Spencer Out of Fire Running
The Chicago Fire plans to announce a new coach by the end of the week, but it won’t be Dynamo assistant John Spencer, according to the Houston Chronicle. Spencer on Wednesday said he rejected an offer to become Fire head coach because the parties couldn’t agree to personal terms. “[Tuesday] I got offered the job […]

Confusion in Columbus
[MLS WATCH] When is an option not an option? When a player like Guillermo Barros Schelotto believes both sides have equal power to extend or terminate the contract, and the other entity, in this case MLS, defines it as something else.
Double D does Dallas
Ridge Mahoney examines MLS’s first major signing of 2008
The deal in Dallas is done; former Mexican international defender Duilio Davino has signed a two-year contract. He’s no longer with the national team, having last played for Mexico in a friendly against Paraguay prior to the 2006 World Cup, for which he wasn’t selected. True, this indicates he’s not quite as strong or fast as he was while playing 84 times for his country and 323 league games for Club America, yet it also means – unless he’s recalled – that he won’t be tied up with qualifiers and the sometimes staggering load of friendlies piled onto the national team.
Decision day turns on a coin flip
[INTERLIGA] Club America and Atlas joined San Luis and Cruz Azul as the final four Mexican contestants for two spots in the Copa Libertadores by scoring five goals in a 3-2 America win Wednesday night at Home Depot Center as Interliga group play concluded. But in spirit of the tournament’s wacky tradition, matters weren’t completely settled at the final whistle.
What They’re Saying
“[Tuesday] I got offered the job in Chicago, accepted it and sat down to try and negotiate a contract, but we couldn’t come to terms. It wasn’t much more money than I [was making] here with the Dynamo, and I felt that to move my family to another state and all the upheaval and such, I just didn’t think it was worth it, so I turned it down.”

Coach for a Day
[OFF THE POST] German lower division club KFC Uerdingen, trying to raise money to avoid looming bankruptcy, is auctioning off a chance to coach the team for a day. The highest eBay bidder will get to run the team for a 24-hour period that will include a friendly against Rot Weiss Oberhausen. The ad reads: “Whether you’re an old school drill sergeant, an introverted tactical fox, an emotional motivator or a completely different kind of coach is entirely up to you.”

Ronaldinho Treatment Slammed
Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster accused Barcelona of treating star players like Ronaldinho poorly, and cited that as the reason that he himself left the club. “It is very unjust. MLS Can’t Afford Not to Lose Twellman
At 27, Taylor Twellman thought there would be no second chance at playing abroad. But following a stellar 2007, the New England Revolution striker caught the attention of English club Preston North End, which lodged a $1.7 million bid for the New England Revolution. MLS rejected the bid. Preston plays in England’s Coca-Cola Championship, its […]
