Foreigners dominate First XI
[WPS] Foreigners — three from England, two from France and one each from Brazil and Canada — claimed seven of the 11 berths on Women’s Professional Soccer’s First XI. Brazilian Marta, who plays for regular-season champion Los Angeles, was the highest vote-getter. (The English and French players will miss the All-Star Game against Sweden’s Umea on Aug. 29 because of Euro ’09.)

Crew Keeping it Together Despite Important Absences
This time last season, the Columbus Crew were just "America's Hardest Working Team," always pretty good but hardly ever great. But after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Houston on Aug. 2, 2008 left its injured/absent/suspended squad seemingly down for the count and a long shot for the playoffs, "America's Most Resilient Team" rallied […]
Cooper Sr. Calls Out MLS on Young Americans’ Pay
There are overbearing sports parents, those who unconditionally criticize and blindly claim that their son/daughter isn't being utilized or valued enough, and there are sports parents who played the sport and might actually know what they're talking about. Whether former FC Dallas striker Kenny Cooper has the former or latter is up for debate after […]
Evaluating Bruce Arena, One Year In
With an almost endless string of incoming and outgoing players in L.A. over the past four years, whether it be signings as big as Beckham or players such as Ante Jazic and Alecko Eskandarian merely being moved down the hall to HDC roommate Chivas, the Galaxy has hardly been what you'd call a solid "team." […]
Sign of the Times: Chivas’ Vergara Vents Via Twitter
In a sign of the times and what also a prescient sign of the things to come (although we kind of hope it's not, for the sake of our already over-informed society), a prominent off-the-field figure from a popular sports franchise has taken to Twitter to voice his frustration about the performance of the team. […]
UEFA ‘Disquiet’ At Over Man City, Real Madrid Spending
UEFA General Secretary David Taylor has come out to denounce the lavish spending of European clubs such as Manchester City and Real Madrid for fear that they're risking "serious difficulties" if they continue to over-extend themselves by paying huge sums in the transfer market. "I would say in this financial climate, it is surprising, a […]
1994 the Turning Point for Brazil Dominance
Now 15 years removed from the first ever World Cup in the USA, we can look back and see that with its massive stadiums full of soldout crowds, USA 1994 changed what the tournament could be from an attendance and financial windfall. But SI.com's Tim Vickery goes one step further regarding the '94 World Cup's […]

Clout of the Hispanic soccer market
[TELEVISION WATCH] The USA-Mexico Gold Cup was a ratings bonanza for Fox Soccer Channel and Univision. It was the most-watched telecast on FSC since becoming a Nielsen-rated network in October 2008 but its audience was less than one-tenth of the 5.4 million viewers on Univision. Indicative of the huge clout of the Hispanic soccer market, KMEX Univision 34 in Los Angeles drew 1.1 million watchers — 47 percent greater than the same evening’s combined primetime viewership of ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and three other network stations in that market.

Soehn and Kreis in hot seats
[MLS] Curt Onalfo was one of five coaches who were in their third MLS seasons as head coaches. The Kansas City coach was the first to be fired, but two of the other coaches could find themselves on the way out if the downturns of their teams continue.
Onalfo is latest victim of ‘three and out’
[MLS] The soccer catchphrase — three and out — is routinely attached to teams that crash out of a competition after the first round, which often consists of a triad of games. For many well-known MLS coaches, it’s also been three and out — three seasons and they’re gone. The latest to fall at that hurdle is Curt Onalfo, whose tenure as Kansas City head coach blew up 18 games into his third season Saturday when FC Dallas pummeled the Wizards, 6-0, at Pizza Hut Park.

Loyal, long-time Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher asks for the likes of the seemingly already-gone Xavi Alonso and Javier Mascherano to remain at the club or at least resolve their impending exits in a timely fashion. “When you have gone as close as we did last season,” said Carragher, “you don’t want to lose anyone from […]
Man City’s Hughes Maligns EPL Managers’ Mind Games
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes attributes jealousy as the cause for comments from the likes of Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez that have suggested his historically small club’s off-season spending spree has “distorted the transfer market.” “I have never had to court publicity myself because I played for […]
Schmid, Evans Embarrassed by Sounders’ ‘Shocker’
“I hate to get embarrassed, and we got embarrassed today. Over the course of 30 games, sometimes you’re going to have a shocker like we had today. We just need to make sure that doesn’t become the norm.” That was Seattle Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid, speaking about Saturday’s surprising 4-0 loss to San Jose […]
Ibsen ‘Saved By the Beach’
