Having not been together in three months' time (almost an eternity in international soccer scheduling), the U.S. men's national team's "2½-hour flight from Miami to Costa Rica marks the beginning of a summer-long world tour that will feature 14 matches on three continents and in four time zones," writes writer Wayne Dreh in the first […]

MLS Made Great Strides in the Garber Decade
My, how time flies. It was just 10 years ago when Major League Soccer was three and a half years old and "suffering through some painful growing processes," writes Steve Davis, with "one, lone soccer-specific stadium" and most teams "treading water at best," where "'diversity of ownership' meant the three guys sitting around a small […]

[USA-MEXICO] U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley named the 20 players — 13 based abroad and seven in MLS — whom he will take to Mexico City for Wednesday’s much-anticipated showdown with Mexico in World Cup 2010 qualifying.

Cooper gone, but Cunningham sparks FC Dallas revival
[MLS] There’s nothing about a lackluster season that a four-game winning streak won’t cure, or at least alleviate. About a month ago, the Galaxy went on a four-game blitz that lifted it into the playoff picture, and now the same can be said for FC Dallas. As it bid adieu to Kenny Cooper, striker Jeff Cunningham got red hot. He struck once again on Thursday evening to take Dallas past Texas rival Houston.
Top two in East head west
[MLS PREDICTIONS] Eastern Conference leader and defending champ Columbus travels to the Pacific Coast to play San Jose, and second-place Chicago takes on the Western leader in Houston. The Revs and Galaxy put their unbeaten streaks on the line head-to-head at Gillette Stadium, and Seattle gets a chance to improve its dismal record on grass at Rio Tinto Stadium. FSC offers up a tripleheader of two MLS games followed by the Barcelona-Guadalajara friendly (11 p.m. ET). For all of Soccer America’s predictions, as well as TV viewing information, and to see how Ridge Mahoney fared so far this season …
What They’re Saying
“Jozy is unproven at this level but we feel he has great potential and hopefully he can fill the void with goals from the front line. He is only 19 and we want to help him fulfill his potential here.”
— Phil Brown, coach of English Premier League club Hull City, on acquiring U.S. national team forward Jozy Altidore, who arrives on a one-year loan from Spanish La Liga club Villarreal. Altidore made six appearances and scored once for Villarreal, which he joined from the MLS’s New York Red Bulls in the summer of 2008. (hullcityafc.net)
Club-by-club summer moves
One young American arrived in France, and another departed. Charlie Davies should be a better fit at Sochaux, in need of help up front, than Freddy Adu was at Monaco, where he was just one of a dozen or so prospects in the first team. For all the French league player moves …
Biggest French league deals
[TRANSFER WATCH] The 2009-10 French season begins Saturday. The big winner on the French transfer market was Portuguese champion Porto, which earned more than $85 million in transfer fees from four separate deals. In an effort to regain the title it lost after seven seasons as champion, Lyon spent more than $100 million on players.
Not worth a try?
[OFF THE POST] When Tranmere Rovers hired Dornoch Capital to find a buyer for the club, this is not what it had mind: The U.S. firm put the third division club up for sale on eBay, with bidding starting at $10 million. “We were appalled,” said Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson, who ordered the listing removed. “This is not a second-hand bike we’re selling.”
Aguirre Already Managing Expectations for Aug, 12
In an effort to temper the hysteria (and no doubt, tremendous relief) that the Mexican national team felt after finally snapping a winless streak on U.S. soil, head coach Javier Aguirre has come out to contain the renewed country-wide enthusiasm in El Tri. "In Mexico we're prone to throw ourselves on the floor after a […]
Four-Goal Loss to Barca Not the First For Keller
An overmatched defense, a veritable firing range of opposing shots, and a lopsided 4-0 loss in front of a soldout crowd cheering on FC Barcelona? Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller had been there, done that. "I had my ass kicked once 5-1 at Camp Nou (Barcelona's 97,000-seat home stadium), so I've seen it before," admitted Keller, […]
Robinho: Man City = Real Madrid, Brazil?
There’s some serious talk being talked out of England today, and for his sake, Robinho better hope his expensive new teammates can walk the walk. Perhaps feeling like the spotlight had been stolen yet again by Xabi Alonso‘s signing on board at Real Madrid from Liverpool, the Brazilian forward boasted that with its own new […]
This Week In … If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It
An old, but curious conversation has come out of Salt Lake City following the 2009 MLS All-Star Game and its climactic/anti-climactic (depending on who you ask, of course) penalty-kick shootout. According to the Deseret News, Real Salt Lake boss Dave Checketts "said he enjoyed the penalty-kick shootout so much in last week's MLS All-Star Game […]
Club vs. Academy Argument in American Youth Soccer
The club vs. academy argument being had in youth soccer circles from the D.C. and northern Virginia area is, at least for now, being won by the side backed by the U.S. Soccer, as D.C. United's Under-17 team recently won its second SUM Cup in three years and made the U.S. Soccer Development Academy finals. […]
Argentine Season Suspended Amid Debt, Unrest
As further proof of the extent of the global financial crisis, the Aug. 14 opening of the Argentine First Division's Apertura season has been suspended indefinitely by the Argentine soccer federation (AFA) as it seeks "a solution to clubs' massive debts," according to Reuters. "The executive committee of the AFA resolved unanimously tonight (Tuesday) that […]
Ljungberg Here to Entertain, ‘Educate’ America
The season-long MLS success story that is Seattle Sounders FC still soldiers on, with substantial crowds still filing into Qwest Field despite a recent drop in play, and it’s in large part thanks to presence of superstar Freddie Ljungberg, whom Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley calls “the perfect player, the perfect personality, exactly the right […]
Mix it up and let players ‘train’ players
In our youth soccer environment the training sessions tend to be fairly sterile in that the U7 team only practices with the U7 age group, girls only practice with girls, and so forth.
‘Super Cooper’ attracts a crowd
[AMERICANS ABROAD] Kenny Cooper‘s first practice with 1860 Munich attracted more than 400 fans, a crowd far higher than usual at a training session by the German second division club, according to newspaper Bild, which reported that “Super Cooper managed to perform despite the jetlag.”
Outta my way, corner flag [VIDEO]

Altidore headed to Hull
[AMERICANS ABROAD] Striker Jozy Altidore, who earlier appeared headed to Greece on loan from his Spanish club Villarreal, will spend the next season in England with EPL club Hull. “First match is against Chelsea subject to a work permit *wink* *wink*,” announced the 19-year-old on his Twitter page.
The Red Bulls blow it again
[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Leave it to the worst team in Major League Soccer to blow the league’s best chance of advancing to the group phase of the Concacaf Champions’ League. New York took two away goals and a 2-2 aggregate into its home leg at Giants Stadium on Wednesday, and in the first half increased its edge by scoring the first goal. Rather salvaging some semblance of accomplishment in a dismal season, the Red Bulls reverted to the ineptitude that has defined their performance in 2009, which includes MLS’s worst record and preliminary-round U.S. Open Cup elimination.
Messi shows his stuff in Seattle [VIDEO]
[BARCELONA TOUR] Argentine Lionel Messi showed a record Seattle soccer crowd of 66,848 at Qwest Field why he is the best player in the world at the moment, scoring two first goals to lead Barcelona to a 4-0 win over MLS’s Sounders.
