[MLS WEEKEND TV PREVIEW] Five intra-conference games are featured this weekend, with the only crossover game sending Columbus to Western leader Houston. In the East, D.C. heads north to Canada where FC Toronto could set a league record in scoring futility, first-place New England hosts New York, and Kansas City plays Chicago for the second time in four days. Chivas USA stays at HDC to play Real Salt Lake, and the Galaxy Futility Tour heads to Colorado.

Beckham back but Galindo grabs the glory
Not for the first time, the man who’d survived the most arduous journey to reach Home Depot Center stole the show. Maykel Galindo came to Chivas USA via Seattle and all the piles of paperwork necessary to properly process a Cuban defector who’d left his national team 2 ½ years ago during the Gold Cup. He put away two goals of exquisite class as Chivas USA (10-6-3) embarrassed Los Angeles, 3-0, to cast the Galaxy’s playoff hopes deeper in doubt. David Beckham lasted the full 90 after going the distance the day before in England’s loss to Germany. It was Beckham’s third full game in a six days, a stretch that began with Saturday’s loss in New York, and he was limping by the game’s end.
USA lacks guile in Gothenburg
For all the weight placed on team cohesion and collective performance in evaluating a soccer game, many matches are decided by which individuals step up. So it proved to be Wednesday night when Sweden beat the USA, 1-0. No U.S forward could match the guile and threat of Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, midfielders Kim Kim Källstrom and Kennedy Bakircioglü outplayed their U .S. counterparts, and the Swedish defense far more effectively blunted the opposition.
U.S. REPORT CARD: Average or worse for most Bradley boys
Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney grades the U.S. players’ performance in their 1-0 loss to Sweden …
Historic Night for Jaime
Jaime Moreno set a league goalscoring record as D.C. United won a crucial conference match over New York. Many of his goals (33) the past few years have been penalties, yet on the historic night of his 109th MLS goal, Moreno did much more than just convert from the spot. His flicks and touches and dummies unhinged the Red Bull New York backline as D.C. (11-6-3) rolled to a 3-1 victory at RFK Stadium.
Kansas City overcomes Cuauhtemoc
The Wizards scrambled to contain Cuauhtemoc Blanco, whose passes led to a pair of goals, but produced three goals of their own thanks to Jose Burciaga Jr. to beat Chicago, 3-2.
Stars zoom home for Los Angeles clasico
[TV PREVIEW] U.S. coach Bob Bradley did his MLS counterparts Frank Yallop and Preki a favor. England coach Steve McLaren wasn’t so accommodating. Bradley pulled off Landon Donovan and Jonathan Bornstein during the USA’s 1-0 loss to Sweden, but McLaren played David Beckham the full 90 minutes of England’s 2-1 home defeat against Germany. All three are expected to be back at Home Depot Center for this edition of the Los Angeles-Chivas USA derby; yet to be determined is how much, if at all, they can play.
Sweden a good fit for first European date under Bradley
Fourteen games into the tenure of Coach Bob Bradley the U.S. takes its first trip to Europe, and much like the Copa America proved to be a valuable if somewhat humbling venture, the importance of this match extends beyond the result. There are no finished products on the 19-man roster named by Bradley named to face Sweden (Fox Soccer Channel & Galavision 2:30 p.m. ET) at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg. Getting Americans abroad, whether that be to play for a foreign club or on a national-team road trip, is a vital component of restocking the player pool.
MLS midweek doubleheader kicks off stretch run
[TV PREVIEWS] Two months remain in the regular season and only Real Salt Lake is without a real chance to make the playoffs. A nine-game slate of league action this week gets underway with Big Wednesday: a pair of crucial Eastern Conference matchups. D.C. United-New York and Kansas City-Chicago.
Central issues for West-leading Dynamo
Houston keeper Pat Onstad earned his eighth shutout and the Dynamo regained first place in the Western Conference by beating in-state rival FC Dallas, 1-0, Sunday, yet a few times the Dynamo escaped despite soft defending in the middle.
Stoking the Fire
Chicago coach Juan Carlos Osorio has brought a new player who should shore up one of the team’s weak spots. Colombian international defender Wilman Conde, 24, comes to MLS from Colombia’s Millonarios, which Osorio coached for 18 months prior to joining the Fire in late June. Conde takes a senior international slot on the team’s roster and in exchange, a youth international slot has opened up with the release of Brazilian Willian Oliveira.
Wings of an Angel
Here’s Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo‘s take on New York’s Juan Pablo Angel: “He’s been an unbelievably great addition to the league.” Angel earned the Red Bulls three points in their incredible 5-4 win over the Galaxy Saturday with hustle, desire and skill.
Beckham, Blanco and Angel deliver
[MLS WEEKEND REPORT] David Beckham, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Juan Pablo Angel deliver on a great day for the Designated Players: The Red Bulls outlast the Galaxy in a nine-goalapalooza; Houston beats Dallas to regain top spot in the West; New England widens its Eastern lead by beating Kansas City again; Chicago wins in Utah to tighten up the playoff race; D.C. dumps the Crew; and Chivas USA extends Toronto’s drought.
The Rapids rip Revs
Don’t write off the Rapids just yet. Jovan Kirovksi scored twice and Colin Clark sliced up New England in a 3-0 romp that pushed Colorado to within two points of a playoff spot. Kirovksi smashed home a rebound in the 10th minute and later in the first half tucked away a penalty resulting from a Jay Heaps foul on Clark, who in the second half hit a long ball that Omar Cummings blasted into the net for his first MLS goal.
Beckham aims for Red Bulls
[MLS WEEKEND PREVIEW] The top two teams in the Western Conference square off; two matches pair up tightly bunched Eastern Conference foes; Beckham does Jersey, RSL may unveil a more South American look for a visit by the Fire and Cuauhtemoc Blanco, and Toronto hosts the second meeting of the USA’s border neighbors.
Becks breaks through
[VIDEO] Okay, now, can everybody just get with the program? Just like the man’s been saying for a month, this is about soccer, too. With two graceful swipes of his right foot, supported ably by the touchy left one, David Beckham bent home a brilliant free kick and turned loose Landon Donovan for the goals that dumped D.C. United, 2-0, and earned Los Angeles a date in the first SuperLiga final.
Shaky Rapids need win against New England
[MLS THURSDAY PREVIEW] The Rapids halted a 10-game winless streak by upending Houston, 1-0, last weekend courtesy of a Dwayne DeRosario own goal but need another result against New England to strengthen its shaky playoff hopes. One-game suspensions to Herculez Gomez and Ugo Ihemelu won’t help the cause and Colorado is still near the bottom of the goalscoring heap with just 17.
Fluffed penalties thwart heroic Houston effort in SuperLiga
Another enthralling contest with Pachuca meant another bitter defeat for the Houston Dynamo. Pachuca prevailed on penalty kicks, 4-3, in a SuperLiga semifinal Tuesday after the teams toughed out a 2-2 tie in 120 minutes of regulation and overtime, most of which Houston played a man down following the ejection of defender Patrick Ianni in the 12th minute.
MLS Midseason Report
The Eastern Conference is loaded, but the best team(s) may be out west. Houston, New England and D.C. United look like the most likely champions with one half of the season to be played, yet a few others are impossible to dismiss.
U.S. Men’s team: Summer Lessons
Some players dazzled, others stumbled as U.S. teams played 14 matches in three countries during a trio of international tournaments. Amid the results emerged the next crop of candidates for the 2010 World Cup squad, with the fortunes of many players partially dependent on next year’s Olympic Games.
Dramatic Dallas win; Red Bulls romp
[MLS WEEKEND WRAPUP] Dallas takes over top spot in the Western Conference by beating Columbus as Houston loses it second straight; the Red Bulls return from a long hiatus to thump Toronto; and a big crowd at Gillette Stadium sees a victory but not David Beckham.
FC Dallas eyes Western Conference lead
[MLS WEEKEND PREVIEWS] The David Beckham show moves to New England, where the Galaxy looks to get its first win since the Englishman’s arrival four weeks ago. New York is back in action after a two-week layoff, FC Dallas looks to take over the lead in the Western Conference, and Colorado returns home reeling from a 5-0 loss to the USL’s Seattle and carrying a 10-game winless streak into its game against Houston.
His debut done, Becks faces staggering task
The MLS debut of David Beckham harshly illustrated the incongruities plaguing his new team and what he perhaps can do to resolve its myriad problems. During a runout of about 20 minutes in a 1-0 loss to D.C. United at RFK Thursday, he swerved a threatening free kick that produced a good chance, and flighted another immaculate ball into space that on another night would have yielded a goal or a penalty kick rather than a spectacular defensive play. Sparked by Beckham and a fresh pair of forwards following a straight red-card to Kyle Martino for nailing Fred from behind, Team Beckham actually looked like a soccer team, much more so than it had without him while tying Toronto, 0-0, on Sunday. Play badly and tie, play better and lose, that’s soccer.
Galaxy needs points more than Beckham
[TV PREVIEW] He’s mentioned in the headline. That’s all on David Beckham, who should sit out Thursday’s D.C. United-Los Angeles game (TV: ESPN2, 7 pm ET).
No-show watch in D.C.
D.C. United has announced Thursday’s game against the Galaxy — to be televised on ESPN2 — is a sellout. Now, how many of those 45,000 tickets will actually be used, with the prospect likely David Beckham will sit this one out as well, and how vitriolic will be the fans who do show up? Boos rained down on Becks at BMO Field in Toronto Sunday as he sat on the bench during a 0-0 tie, which was also nationally televised, but still the place was packed.
