No-show watch in D.C.

D.C. United has announced Thursday’s game against the Galaxy — to be televised on ESPN2 — is a sellout. Now, how many of those 45,000 tickets will actually be used, with the prospect likely David Beckham will sit this one out as well, and how vitriolic will be the fans who do show up? Boos rained down on Becks at BMO Field in Toronto Sunday as he sat on the bench during a 0-0 tie, which was also nationally televised, but still the place was packed.

Becks on call

MLS and the Galaxy, exalted by media outlets throughout the land – for the most part – seven months ago for landing David Beckham are being lashed almost daily by many of those same outlets as his tender left ankle slowly heals. “Damaged goods,” “bait and switch,” “Bench It Like Beckham”, each day brings a fresh barb of stinging criticism. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney looks beyond the hyperbole and examines how the Galaxy and MLS have handled Beckham’s injury and whether fans have been treated fairly.

Revs just good enough to shade Wizards, 2-0

A narrow-angle goal by the birthday boy and a stoppage-time clincher by his substitute separated the top two Eastern Conference teams at Gillette Stadium Thursday. Pat Noonan celebrated his 27th birthday by tucking away a Taylor Twellman header, and Adam Cristman ran onto a sweet Steve Ralston cross to notch his fourth goal of the season as the Revs (9-3-6) beat Kansas City (8-6-5) for the first time at Gillette Stadium, 2-0.

BMO believers beckon to Becks

[MLS Weekend Previews] Two more crucial Eastern Conference showdowns are on tap; Houston, Los Angeles, and D.C. United get back to MLS business after advancing to the SuperLiga semifinals; FC Dallas hopes to get well against Colorado after being smacked for six goals by the Galaxy; and the barmy BMO believers beckon to Becks.

Dynamo and D.C. play for spot(s) in SuperLiga semifinals

There’s much more on the line than a spot in the SuperLiga semifinals when Houston hosts D.C. United Wednesday (8 p.m. ET, TeleFutura, mlslive.tv) as play concludes in Group B. Tied atop the group with four points, neither team is assured of advancing should this match end in a tie. If Morelia beats Club America (10 p.m. ET, TeleFutura, mlslive.tv), there would be a three-way logjam of teams with five points and tiebreakers would be needed to determine which two teams move on and which one does not.

Adu needs clear view of his new world

Freddy Adu is within a few dollars of realizing his dream: a spot with a prestigious European team, in this case Benfica of Portugal, which has bid $2 million to buy his contract from MLS that expires at the end of this year. No doubt if terms are successfully negotiated and he signs a deal with Benfica or another team, one of his first statements will pertain to being shackled and stifled in MLS, his creativity smothered, his talents squandered. Such a perception is perfectly understandable from a spoon-fed prodigy handed a half-million-dollar salary and lucrative endorsements at age 14, and anointed as great by those people who represent him and the league that embraced him. The perception is also perfectly wrong.

Blanco leads Fire past Toronto in MLS debut

The Chicago Fire rolled to a 3-0 win in the MLS debut of Mexican attacker Cuauhtemoc Blanco and presented head coach Juan Carlos Osorio his first MLS victory. New England also won on the road, beating Real Salt Lake, 2-1. Spectacular goals by Kerry Zavagnin and Yuri Movsisyan propelled the Kansas City Wizards past Chivas USA, 3-2, and pushed them to within a point of the Eastern Conference lead now held by the Revs.

Just one team is out of SuperLiga with one round to go

Of the eight SuperLiga teams, only Club America is eliminated with each team still to play its final group game. D.C. United beat America, 1-0, Sunday on a Rod Dyachenko goal and is tied for first place in Group B with Houston, which scored from the opening kickoff against Morelia yet conceded a pub-league equalizer and ended up tied, 1-1. Guadalajara took over the lead in Group A by beating the Galaxy, 2-1, in front of more than 37,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. FC Dallas played its second straight 1-1 tie, against Pachuca, and despite being in third place can advance if it beats the Galaxy at home Tuesday night.

Ryan begins final push for Women’s World Cup

[WOMEN’S WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN] He has three more games and a few more weeks before he must submit his list of players for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, yet head coach Greg Ryan finalized his roster last week by adding three players to an original list of 18. Forward Natasha Kai, midfielder Angela Hucles and defender Marion Dalmy got the nod. Kai and Dalmy are two of six World Cup players who have debuted for the national team since Ryan took over from April Heinrichs in March, 2005. Starting Saturday against Japan at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Ryan will tinker not with formations and systems, but with blocs of 11 players who he believes may earn starting slots in the World Cup.

Odds stacked against Galaxy in Chivas match — with or without Beckham

[SUPERLIGA PREVIEWS] The odds are stacked against the Galaxy for its Saturday showdown with Guadalajara (10 p.m. ET, TeleFutura), whether or not David Beckham‘s tender ankle allows him to play. Guadalajara has been bolstered by national team and under-20 players who were given additional time off to recover from the Copa America and FIFA U-20 World Cup, respectively, and a huge crowd swathed in red-and-white stripes is expected to pile into the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Off-field spats highlight MLS meeting of East and West

David Beckham has made his debut and the SuperLiga has kicked off amid spectacle and controversy, yet MLS league play rolls right along sparking off its own fireworks. Houston and New England shared six goals and Kansas City split four goals with Colorado Sunday in high-scoring ties, and the return of Thursday night league action with New York hosting Chivas USA finds a team that can’t lose at home visiting the team whose search for a new home has been roiled with problems for most of this decade.

SuperLiga gives MLS shot at boosting credibility in Mexican-American market

After more than a decade of friendlies and occasional meetings in CONCACAF competitions, MLS is taking the Mexican League head-on. And proponents of the SuperLiga, such as D.C. United president and general manager Kevin Payne, can’t wait. The competition is part of MLS’s long-term plan to create greater credibility for its teams in the Mexican-American market.

Galaxy draws sternest SuperLiga test

[TV PREVIEW] The question of how far, if at all, David Beckham can drag the Galaxy out of its league doldrums will have to wait. First up is the SuperLiga, and if President Alexi Lalas, Coach Frank Yallop, et al, landed the supernova of Designated Players, they’ve also been saddled with the largest obstacle of the four Mexican entrants. In the past eight months, Pachuca — the Galaxy’s foe at Home Depot Center Tuesday (11 pm ET, TeleFutura) – has knocked off domestic and South American opposition to win the Copa Sudamericana, conquer all comers in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and race off with the Mexican Clausura championship.

The Beckham Era Begins

He debuted. He played. He didn’t get hurt, or at least, didn’t apparently injure himself any further. Now what? Now that Chelsea won, and the Galaxy lost, and David Beckham has been officially presented in a match of that hoary 1-0 scoreline, can American soccer resume normal behavior?

Colombians lead MLS All-Stars to convincing win over Celtic

The news regarding David Beckham is that there is no news, so the world can wait a little longer to learn if he will play Saturday against Chelsea, and MLS officials can savor a fourth straight victory by its all-stars against a foreign team. Colombians Juan Pablo Angel, who was named MVP, and Juan Toja scored excellent goals and Dwayne DeRosario dominated midfield as the MLS All-Stars beat Glasgow Celtic, 2-0, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. DeRosario put through Angel to evade Celtic FC keeper Artur Boruc, whose herioics kept the game close, and stroke his shot into an empty net. Toja pounced on a partially blocked free kick to fire past Boruc from close range.
