MLS hits goal drought
[WEEKEND WRAPUP] On a barren weekend of just five goals in five games, Columbus beat Red Bull New York, 1-0, for its third straight victory; zeroes were posted in the Dallas-Houston and Chicago-Colorado showdowns; the Revs ran aground at Home Depot Center; and Toronto’s backup to the backup goalie helped it tie Kansas City, 1-1. Ridge Mahoney recaps all the MLS weekend action …
Dreadful Americans escape with tie in Under-20 World Cup opener
The USA survived the worst performance by a U.S. national youth team at a world championship in recent memory to earn a 1-1 tie with South Korea Saturday in their opening game at the Under-20 World Cup. Much of the announced sellout crowd of 55,800 at Olympic Stadium had left after witnessing Poland stun South American champion Brazil, 1-0, the opening game of the Group D doubleheader, and the pro-Korean crowd that remained watched the Americans give the ball away time and again and struggle to keep up with the quick Koreans on the artificial turf.
USA must put it all together to get a result against Paraguay
[COPA AMERICA PREVIEW] The glaring disparity in talent that was evident when Argentina beat the USA, 4-1, last Thursday won’t be as prevalent Monday when the Americans take on Paraguay in Barinas, Venezuela, yet Paraguay looked tremendous in its 5-0 win against Colombia, playing a fluid, organized game unlike its rigid, defense-first squads at previous World Cups. If the Americans are again rocked back on their heels, they could be chasing the game for longer than they did against Argentina.
USA ready for turf wars at U-20 World Cup
Josmer Altidore, the most exciting American teenager since Freddy Adu, is on the team. So is Adu, who believes this tournament — his third U-20 world championship — is his springboard to fame and glory in Europe. Midfielder Michael Bradley isn’t glorious or famous yet, but he appeared in 21 games for Dutch club Heerenveen last season and played several solid matches for the U.S. at the Gold Cup. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney looks at the U.S. U-20 national team and its chances for success at the Under-20 World Cup, which begins Saturday in Canada.
D.C. United rides out weather and Rapids
Of the two 4-1 games played Thursday night, only one was closer than the score would indicate and it wasn’t the U.S. loss to Argentina in the Copa America. Rain, lightning, and two late strikes by D.C. United swept Colorado to its fifth straight defeat, 4-1, after Colorado wasted chances to stay in the game.
USA wilts in Copa opener against Argentina
Back to the real world. The Copa America in any South American nation is a long way from the Gold Cup anywhere in the United States. An Argentine lineup featuring several world-class stars pummeled a makeshift American team, 4-1, to end the 11-match unbeaten run of Coach Bob Bradley. After a courageous hour of surviving at 1-1 with sweat and grit, the U.S. resolve melted in a searing display of skill and speed by the tournament favorites.

West battle highlights MLS weekend
[MLS WEEKEND PREVIEWS]. Dallas and Houston, the top two teams in the Western Conference square off, the Crew tries to keep its revival going at home against New York, the Revs head west to test Chivas USA, Chicago plays its first league match in four years without coach Dave Sarachan, and Kansas City hosts Toronto in a tightening Eastern Conference race. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney previews all the weekend’s MLS action …
Underdog USA brings some bite to Copa
The much-maligned roster taken by Coach Bob Bradley to the Copa America is designed for long-term benefit, not short-term results. With 15 of the 22 players chosen based in MLS, and many eligible to compete as U-23 players in the Olympic soccer tournament next year, getting out of the group is a realistic, if difficult, task. It is not the main objective. Yet failure to do so, with two of the three third-place teams advancing, would be a disappointment. They need a win and a tie, plain and simple. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney rates the U.S. squad, position by position …
‘Trader Mo’s’ latest deal lands Todd Dunivant
His penchant to swap players has anointed Toronto head coach Mo Johnston with the nickname “Trader Mo,” yet his trigger-finger frenzy of jettisoning players he’s recently acquired is more “Quick Draw McGraw.”
Salt Lake’s owner Checketts doesn’t get GolTV
Majority ownership in GolTV will not become part of Real Salt Lake operator-investor Dave Checketts’ sports and entertainment empire.
Building on the Gold Cup victory
Capturing the Gold Cup may not mean much beyond the far-flung boundaries of CONCACAF. Of the regional titles first comes the European Championship, then the Copa America, with the Gold Cup, Asian Cup and African Cup of Nations trailing in their wake. But for a team and program in transition, and a head coach unbeaten yet still unproven in the minds of many, parading a golden garden planter around Soldier Field to a largely Mexican audience will more than suffice. More than three weeks of training and competitive play, of sharing rooms and meals and bus trips, lays a foundation for the future.
Resilient Americans prevail in a Superclasico
Add a comeback 2-1 win against its archrival and another Gold Cup title to the USA ledger. Add a squandered 1-0 halftime lead to Mexico’s record of futility north of the border. Add another feather to the headdress of Bob Bradley, whose unbeaten record as U.S. head coach is 10-0-1 heading into the Copa America. Add Benny Feilhaber’s searing winner to the list of best U.S. goals, and the landmark occasion of Landon Donovan tying Eric Wynalda atop the all-time goalscoring list at 34. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney reports from Chicago …

Real Salt Lake finally wins
[WEEKEND WRAP]. It took 12 games, but Real Salt Lake finally won its first game of the season, victimizing D.C. United. Andy Dorman’s two goals helped New England thump Toronto FC to move the Revs into first place in the East. Young Colombia Juan Toja was again the hero in a win for FC Dallas, which downed struggling Colorado. Los Angeles fell to Columbus despite playing a man up for an hour in a game that saw each team fail from the penalty spot. Houston eked past Kansas City, shut out for the first time this season.
Good hire, bad circumstances
CHANGE IN CHICAGO. The Fire has dropped head coach Dave Sarachan, who’d bought himself some time by starting the season with three wins and a tie but had lost six of the last eight with a squad depleted by national-team call-ups and injuries.
Galaxy’s Yallop isn’t done wheeling and dealing
L.A. Galaxy coach Frank Yallop isn’t done revamping his roster. Los Angeles acquired veteran midfielder Chris Klein from Real Salt Lake in exchange for rookie forward Robbie Findley and U-20 midfielder/defender Nathan Sturgis and signed 33-year-old Honduran international Carlos Pavon, and Yallop is discussing options for Santino Quaranta with several clubs.
Wolff makes pitch for Quakes to play in 2008 MLS season
Oakland A’s co-owner Lewis Wolff visited the MLS league headquarters this week along with several staff members of Earthquakes LLC to make his pitch to start play next season, with stadium arrangements to be decided. Wolff is discussing with the City of San Jose a two-pronged proposal. He is seeking city approval to re-zone of large parcel of land from industrial use to residential, on which would be built housing. Those residential developments would supply funds that would be used to build a stadium on city-owned land south of the San Jose International Airport.
USA ousts Canada, welcomes Mexico
This U.S. team insists on winning dangerously, but it does keep winning. Whether by external forces or by its own design the USA is finishing matches in the bunker, not in the driver’s seat. Not for the first time in this Gold Cup did the Americans score early, assume control, and then scramble frantically to preserve a victory that seemed be a formality. From Chicago, Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney reports on the 2-1 semifinal win over Canada, which sets up a U.S. Gold Cup final clash with archrival Mexico …

Streaking MLS teams clash in Thursday night action
[TV PREVIEW] Houston and Chivas USA, both in the midst of three-game winning streaks, clash in ESPN2’s Thursday Night MLS game. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear figured he’d lose midfielders Dwayne DeRosario (Canada) and Ricardo Clark (USA) and forward Brian Ching (USA) during the Gold Cup, but he wasn’t expecting the emergency call-up of keeper Pat Onstad to the Canadian team.
Confident Canadians aim at USA
[GOLD CUP PREVIEW] Two decades ago, the U.S. team beat Canada, 3-0, in an Olympic qualifying match and began to shed the label of underdogs. In the Gold Cup semifinals Thursday at Soldier Field in Chicago, it will be the Canadians seeking an upset. From Chicago, Ridge Mahoney previews the semifinal clash that airs on Fox Soccer Channel and Telefutura at 7 pm ET. …
Crew looks to tighten D against KC
[TV PREVIEW] Two teams coming off six-goal games last weekend figure to tighten things up, so there might be a repeat of their May 5 meeting (1-0). Jose Burciaga slalomed through the Crew to score the only goal of the game in the 90th minute to end a Crew three-game shutout streak. That was also the game in which Ricardo Virtuoso’s shoulder cracked the jaw of Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad and Guillermo Barros Schelotto debuted for the Crew. Columbus is a much different team than it was then, which it showed last week by rallying from two goals down to snatch a 3-3 tie with the Revs at Gillette Stadium.
MLS finally delivers goalfests
[VIDEO] Concerns about goalscoring in MLS were allayed somewhat in a high-scoring weekend (27 goals in six games), as excellent finishes punished errors, some large, some small. All goals, many say, stem from errors, but mistakes this season seem to be more costly, and forwards last weekend were especially efficient on breakaways. Are teams punishing defensive errors more ruthlessly?
