U.S. newbies and vets shine against China

This one can be encapsulated rather easily: effective and at times dominant, the USA pasted an inferior Chinese team, 4-1, Saturday and scraped away some rust in its only run-up match for the Gold Cup. No Landon Donovan, no Taylor Twellman, no Brian Ching, no Eddie Johnson, yet still the U.S. scored four goals by four different players. A sloppy equalizing goal blasted high into the net by Zhang Yaokun in the 15th minute sprinkled some nervousness onto a starting 11 featuring debutant Sacha Kljestan and four other players with five or fewer caps. Yet two of those with just a few caps, Michael Bradley (his fifth) and Benny Feilhaber (third), controlled much of the match in midfield, and Kljestan set up Feilhaber for the go-ahead goal with a lobbed ball Feilhaber looped over keeper Chen Dong and over the goalline just before charging Chinese defenders could reach it. The Loan Moan

Hollywood must truly be the land of make-believe, in sports as well as films. When asked if David Beckham, whose return to the English national team sparked a flurry of proclamations between FIFA and the Galaxy about his availability, might be loaned out to a European team during the MLS offseason, Galaxy president Alexi Lalas couldn’t pass up yet another chance to whip up the waters of controversy.

Final spots on line for U.S. U-20s

Players such as Italian-based New Yorker Gabriel Ferrari have a chance to clinch a spot on the U.S. team that will compete in this summer’s U-20 World Cup when Coach Thomas Rongen assesses a 16-man squad during a dress rehearsal tour of Canada. Perhaps half of the players Rongen has taken north of the border for a pair of games against Canada in the next week won’t be on his final roster, yet in the Canadian contingent are several players Rongen has been anxious to observe up close as he makes his final roster decisions for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup (June 30-July 22 in Canada).

Brennan’s strike for Toronto tops MLS golazos

[VIDEO] MLS can be justly criticized for several facets of its play, and the current goalscoring rate of 2.55 goals per game isn’t spectacular, yet more than a few of the goals have been just that. Each of the five nominees for Goal of the Week last week deserved high praise: Toronto midfielder Jim Brennan belted a 35-yarder to take the prize, yet it only edged out Maykel Galindo‘s 30-yard smash after bouncing up from a midfield tackle and a great free kick by Christian Gomez.

Eddie Johnson hat trick highlights MLS Week 8

Eddie Johnson led the Wizards back from a 2-0 deficit with a hat trick to beat the Revs, 4-3. Toronto FC earned its first road goals and initial road point of the season by tying the Crew, 2-2. Reigning league MVP Christian Gomez awoke to lead D.C. United past Houston, 2-1, with a goal and an assist. Chivas USA strikers Maykel Galindo and Ante Razov each netted once to down FC Dallas, 2-0. Colorado took advantage of a Kyle Martino ejection to edge the Galaxy, 1-0. The Fire halted its four-game losing streak but did little else by lurching to a 0-0 home tie against Real Salt Lake. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney recaps all the Memorial Day weekend MLS action …

Bob Bradley tackles the big summer challenge

Only a few prominent names are missing from the 23-man U.S. squad named by Coach Bob Bradley for the Gold Cup, and it’s another team nearly evenly divided between players based overseas and those in MLS. It’s at least two deep at every position (assuming a 4-4-2 alignment or something similar) and good enough to win the Gold Cup. At least a few players will also be on hand for the Copa America, which kicks off for the U.S. against Argentina just a few days after the Gold Cup final June 24, but those details aren’t yet known except that Gold Cup keepers Kasey Keller and Tim Howard probably won’t be heading to South America.

Angel soars and Red Bulls romp

Fire fans who believed their team had already hit rock-bottom were proved wrong Thursday night. Chicago conceded two goals in the first three minutes to the New York Red Bulls (5-1-2) in a 3-0 defeat. After opening the season with a four-game unbeaten streak, Chicago (3-4-1) has dropped four straight.

Fizzling Fire needs a spark

[TV PREVIEW] If ever a team looked in desperate need of a Designated Player, it’s the Chicago Fire. Stuck in a three-game losing streak, Chicago takes on Red Bull New York (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2) at the Meadowlands Thursday without Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who is playing for Club America in the Mexican League finals and Copa Liberatadores. He won’t be available until mid-June at the earliest.

Balancing what beckons Beckham

Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas, talking on his cell phone at the Denver airport waiting for a connecting flight to Los Angeles, is wary of loading too many exhibition matches onto his team’s schedule. Lalas was returning from Minneapolis, having concluded negotiations for his team to feed off the frenzy that will hit these shores in another month or so. Still, playing at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome Oct. 10 against an opponent to be named later makes sense

Mo’ Deals In Toronto: Esky for Cunningham

Not all great goalscorers, or great players, think alike. Real Salt Lake has sent striker Jeff Cunningham to Toronto in exchange for Alecko Eskandarian and TFC’s first-round 2008 SuperDraft pick. Despite scoring 94 goals in his MLS career, Cunningham has bounced among several clubs, and his quirky personality doesn’t mesh well with that of Coach Jason Kreis, who has not wavered from the no-nonsense approach that enabled him to set a league record – since tied by Jaime Moreno – of 108 goals. Let’s just say Kreis didn’t ask to wear No. 108 on his jersey this season before deciding to retire and take over as head coach.

Cunningham’s jersey number last year (76) and this season (90) refer to his goalscoring totals. (He’s netted four this year).

D.C. United gets back to basics

Despite posting a 31-17-16 regular-season record in 2005 and 2006 while playing the most skillful soccer in MLS, United hasn’t returned to MLS Cup. United 2007 again features a glittering array of attackers – Christian Gomez, Jaime Moreno, Fred, Luciano Emilio – yet last Saturday it beat Toronto, 2-1, with the bedrock basics it had drifted away from: hard tackles, tenacious defending, fierce marking.

Revs and Dallas are first to five wins

[VIDEO] Defending champion Houston suffered through another shutout defeat as the Revs prevailed on a Shalrie Joseph goal. Juan Pablo Angel got his first MLS points in a Red Bull rout. FC Dallas extended its Western Conference lead by downing Real Salt Lake, for which Freddy Adu got his first goal. The clasico in Southern California featured a Landon Donovan goal. Jaime Moreno scored a milestone goal for D.C. United in Toronto. Colorado’s not doing it in its new home. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney recaps the weekend’s action

Brimstone rivals go national

[TV PREVIEW] Let’s hope the Brimstone Cup rivalry livens up the ESPN2 national telecast more than the Rocky Mountain Séance between Colorado and Real Salt Lake, a 1-1 tie with no cautions and just about as much passion, did last week. Chances are, it will. Both FC Dallas-Chicago meetings last year were 3-2 thrillers, with FC Dallas winning both of them. The Fire has been beaten in its last two, 3-1, on the road, and is back at Toyota Park, where it has won both of its home games. Last year, though, it lost at home to Dallas.

Two in a row for Mo

When he came off the field last Saturday as a raucous crowd celebrated Toronto FC’s first goal and first victory, captain Jim Brennan said he and his teammates wanted opponents “to be intimidated” when they played at BMO Field. Whether or not defending champion Houston (2-3-1) was intimidated when it played TFC Wednesday night at BMO, it certainly was ineffective despite outshooting the host, 13-7. Andy Welsh‘s headed goal from a Ronnie O’Brien corner kick earned TFC a 1-0 win on a rainy Toronto night, giving coach Mo Johnston and his team their second straight victory.

New look in LA with ‘King Neptune’

The makeover of MLS’s Los Angeles Galaxy, which Coach Frank Yallop began nearly a year ago when he replaced Steve Sampson, continues with one of the more exotic signings in league history. Portuguese defender Abel Xavier, whose dyed-blond beard and curly hair once earned him the nickname ‘King Neptune’ has joined the Galaxy after being released by English Premier League club Middlesbrough. He will be eligible to play once the U.S. secondary transfer window opens June 15.

MLS stadium plans pursued in Houston and San Jose; Pacific Northwest expansion options

Several Houston news outlets have reported that the Dynamo will sign a letter of intent with the city of Houston and the two sides will research the feasibility of building a downtown stadium to house the team. A possible location is a site near Minute Maid Park, home of the MLB Astros. Oakland A’s co-owner Lew Wolff, snubbed in his effort to reach an agreement with San Jose State University officials to build a new facility for SJSU teams as well as a revived Earthquakes franchise, is now looking at a parcel of land between the San Jose International Airport and Santa Clara University.

Twellman tallies twice as Revs take top spot in the East

[MLS VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS] Early goals livened up MLS play as Toronto FC broke onto the scoresheet and into the win column with a 3-1 victory over Chicago. Landon Donovan (two assists) and Taylor Twellman (two goals) slugged it out at Home Depot Center, but TT’s supporting cast overran that of LD as the New England rallied twice to pull out a 3-2 win over Los Angeles. Colorado spoiled the debut of Juan Pablo Angel by beating the Red Bulls, 1-0, and dumping them from the unbeaten ranks. FC Dallas went to Kansas City, where it hadn’t won since 1998, and beat the Wizards, 2-1, with goals by Kenny Cooper and Juan Toja.
