U.S. keeper Juergen Sommer will tie the knot this summer and, perhaps, cut the ties to his current club. Like many of his U.S. teammates, goalkeeper Juergen Sommer is going to be busy this summer — but not because of playing soccer. Instead, Sommer will marry fiancee Susan Prall next month, and take a brief […]

It took him four years and no small measure of sacrifice, but Juergen Sommer is poised to become only the second American-born and bred player to compete in the top echelon of English soccer. Sommer, whose contract with First Division Luton Town expired during the summer, signed a two-year deal with Queen’s Park Rangers of […]

U.S. keeper Kasey Keller played a blinder, but Millwall’s FA Cup run ended with an injury-time penalty and a 1-0 loss to Queen’s Park Rangers. English newspapers seldom bother to look for merits in losers, but they did the day after Millwall went down 1-0 to Queen’s Park Rangers in the fifth round of the […]

Eric Wynalda’s sparkling summer has been followed by an autumn of discontent. Eric Wynalda scored three goals at last summer’s Copa America, helping the U.S. to a fourth-place finish. Since returning to his German club, VfL Bochum, the 26-year-old’s fortunes have soured. He has yet to see action this season. After undergoing a hernia operation […]

After piecing together a squad at the last minute from those players whose club releases could be secured, Sampson watched his team hold out for 85 scoreless minutes, only to be beaten on a dubious […]

Claudio Reyna figures in the rebuilding plans of Bayer Leverkusen, while it appears that Tom Dooley does not. The Bundesliga club, which is finishing a disappointing season, plans on re-signing the 21-year-old Reyna. Dooley, 34, has been linked to Schalke 04 and Waldhof Mannheim, a Second Division club poised for promotion. Both Americans have been […]

It’s all too familiar for Brad Friedel. Once again, he’s in Denmark, instead of England, awaiting a decision on whether he will be issued the work permit he needs to play in the English League. He and U.S. teammate Mike Burns are with Viborg, which won promotion last spring to the Danish Super League but […]

Ernie Stewart shunned sleep when he was a boy and lately he’s avoided rest and relaxation. “I drove my parents crazy,” Stewart said. “I never wanted to go to bed. I wanted to stay up and watch TV or play games. And I’d always get […]

Now, he’s living in a hotel in east Istanbul that overlooks the Black Sea. The goalkeeper who tried to find employment in Nottingham, Newcastle and Sunderland with English clubs is […]

A tie with Inter Milan would have kept Alexi Lalas in the Italian First Division, but a 91st-minute goal gave Inter a 2-1 win June 4. Serie A newcomer Padova must now play Genoa June 10 in a one-game playoff for survival. SOCCER AMERICA: Conceding a goal in injury time must have been crushing. ALEXI […]
