A rarity: back-to-back North Carolina losses

WOMEN’S NEWS … North Carolina dropped back-to-back games for only the sixth time in its history when the No. 3 Tar Heels fell at Miami (Fla.), 1-0, on Beverly Goebel‘s unassisted goal with less than 10 minutes to play. Carolina had its chances, but Maria Lubrano hit the crossbar midway through the first half and Casey Nogueira hit the post with a shot just a couple of minutes before Goebel scored.

The three ACC losses equal the most in history for UNC in a single season, and it is only the second time in history UNC has lost more than one game in ACC play in the same season.  Just so Tar Heel fans know there is hope, they should consider the following: The 2000 UNC team finished 4-3 in the ACC but did go on to win the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament championships.

* FOXHOVEN NETS FOUR MORE. Danielle Foxhoven became the first player in Portland history with two four-goal games in the same season when she scored four times in the No. 2 Pilots’ 8-0 win over San Francisco. Foxhoven also scored four goals against Gonzaga in a 7-0 win. She has has now recorded three hat tricks and 21 goals this season. Sophomore Halley Kreminski became the fifth different Pilot to record a hat trick this season when she scored the last three goals against USF to the delight of 4,059 Portland fans who withstood the cold and rain.

* CHIPPEWAS’ STREAK ALIVE. With its 0-0 tie against Toledo on Sunday, Central Michigan earned its 13th straight shutout, tying North Carolina’s record set in 1989 for the second longest streak of consecutive shutouts in  NCAA Division I women’s  history. The record is 16 straight shutouts set by Santa Clara in 1998. Chippewa goalie Shay Mannino is riding a personal shutout streak of 1124 minutes, the third longest in history.

* MILESTONE. West Virginia coach Nikki Izzo-Brown earned her 200th career victory on Sunday afternoon when the Mountaineers beat Providence, 1-0.

No. 1 Stanford survives scare at Washington State

WOMEN’S NEWS … Stanford got its biggest scare of the season when it needed an overtime goal from senior Kelley O’Hara to beat No. 21 Washington State, 2-1, in Pullman on Friday afternoon.
